Description
I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

And as the criticism is derived from aesthetics combined with storytelling (a thing that looks like a turbine is a turbine), argument from canon is irrelevant.

The butthurt may have been stated for comedic effect.
And air cooling for planetary flight makes even less sense for transatmospheric space ships because cooling is harder in space, being limited to radiative or open-cycle systems. Whatever space magic X-Wings use for cooling in space would work just as well in an atmosphere.

Either way there are no "turbines" on the system. So the picture and argument is moot.

Its not what it looks like because there is no Turbine fan in there.
There are no spinning blades, there are no stationary blades, it is a hollow 'intake'Β
Perhaps you need to look up what a Turbine is.
π: 0 β©: 1
TheCentipede In reply to Streaked-Silver [2015-04-18 13:52:59 +0000 UTC]
I doubt it's even an air intake, since there's nothing in there but plywood.
If you're going to take the non-technical "it's not what it looks like because visual storytelling isn't the point" argument, you have to take it all the way.

Its not what it looks like because there IS NO TURBINE! It is a black hollow intake, that signifies the entry point of an engine.Β Jack Imagined the damn turbines or remembered it wrong.
It is not a "its not what it looks like in a visual medium"
Its "there are no fucking turbines on the damn spaceship and he made it up"

I can usually recognize when people are being particularly serious or not and can thus choose my battles.
Look, my real gripe is that "I don't like how the new one looks, with its cut wings and split nacelles." I pretend to justify it based on "they look like turbines," but that original look is a result of McQuarrie doodling the split nacelle concept art (which, like all of his doodles, got made "canon" somewhere in the EU, the crux of your original argument) and getting the response "no, those don't look engine-y enough, make them roundy" and so you get the very Jerry Anderson "obviously jet-engine-based" original X-Wing. That's a pretense, though. It's taste, and seeing how quickly any aesthetic criticism gains calls of HERESY us naysayers tend to glom together.
Here you've been trying to educate the entire thread, laying down the truth and the light and the way and the law. It's "canonical." For some people, they care, so you point them at Wookieepedia and they go "oh, alright." Others actually doΒ care about some sort of technical explanation for the big holes in front, so you say "air cooling intakes" and they go "oh, alright." Thing is, I care neither about canon nor technical feasibility, partly because it's a matter of taste, partly because the Wars' canon has been hosed since the prequels as far as my taste's concerned, and, as an engineer, I know full well that no technical thought whatsoever went into Star Wars' designs: it's allΒ Rule of Cool. The X-Wing has intakes, the Y-Wing and A-Wing don't, the B-Wing does, TIE Fighters don't, so on and so on and so on. So when you get continuously hotter and hotter and argue that they're cooling air intakes because someone somewhere wrote it to back-justify why something built on Rule of Cool makes sense--always a tall order--I know full well they're not because they're really just 'holes in front of fighter jet because fighter jets have holes in front of them.'
McQuarrie loved intakes. Just look at the Viper from Battlestar Galactica. It has an intake in the bloody nose that couldn't possibly feed any of the three engines in back, and the 'actual' engine intakes are all blocked by the weird cranked gun assemblies or the cockpit. I recognize full well it's Rule of Cool and that no one in their right mind should take it seriously, so the "blatant mechanical misconceptions" inherent in McQuarrie's designs don't bother me none.
Like you said, I like Battletech. Giant robots don't make a lick of sense, mechanically or tactically. They are, however, cool.
I should and do apologize for being a trolling asshole. Recognize, though, with that hindsight that you're probably taking this wayΒ too seriously. In the end, it's not a turbine or a cooling air intake. It's a rule-of-cool jet fighter front-hole. People who don't like it, for whatever reason, aren't heretics to be brought onto the path of righteousness because it's all made upΒ and nothing in the Star WarsΒ universe makes a lick of sense anyway.

Considering that X-wings are a space fighter first and foremost, a turbine would be a terrible idea. I'm sure that its a different kind of sudo science thruster, with an intake looking area on the front of it for interior cooling when in atmosphere.

However, I just want to say why on earth would it be a turbine since a space craft obviously would not need air intake?

It's seen racing on a planet.......with an atmosphere.....which has air....And Luke flies his X-Wing to several planets surfaces in the classic trilogy. It was even a problem in Dagobah since his ship got stuck in the swamp.

You misunderstand: I realize that the X-Wing is designed for surface to space travel. I don't get why such a craft would "need" an air intake. Whatever powers it it certainly isn't a combustion engine.
Ergo I don't get why the assumption would be that those are turbines.
