Description
I generally don't mind redesigns when there is a clear reason for it (example: ED209 in the new Robocop was developed as a military machine, rather than for domestic policing, so it was made to look more like a tank) but when stuff is overhauled just for the sake of it, throwing logic out the window along the way, it becomes irritating. Like when something that is clearly meant to be a turbine splits down the middle.I'm going to reinforce that last bit for people leaping to the design's defence: film is a VISUAL MEDIUM. If something LOOKS like a turbine, IT'S A F**KING TURBINE.

yes because using magical powers to float laser swords that would endlessly shoot off forever also makes visual sense.

And how it suppose to work as turbine in the first place, if it's split in the middle from very beggining and, as a fact, can't even WORK as a turbine, no matter if you spread it or not?

I figured all the internet nerd fandom would have been up in arms back in July of 2014 when the thing was first shown off and in greater detail.Β

Yea but why would they put a turbine engine on a space fighter? I mean yea it would be useful in a planets atmosphere, but it'd be useless in space. And seeing as in the old design you can clearly see that it uses these 'turbine' engines in the vacuum of space, maybe they're not turbines at all, and that the 50 years past since the last epp they've condensed the engine enough to where it pumps out the same power, just in a smaller amount of space.

BTW I think the wings split differently on the Abrams X-wing too.Β Instead of top and bottom wings, like you've drawn, they split into front and back wings.Β It's an even more bizarre change than the turbines, which are kinda o.k. looking, although IMO they've done that look too much already with the proto-X-wing in Revenge of the Sith and the pod racers.

What about the white solar panels on the TIE fighters?
I like the look, my only complaint about it as a look is that it feels like a recolored toy kind of thing.Β Abrams has been accused of letting the needs of the toy manufacturers drive the design decisions being madeΒ (there was an article on Jalopnik).Β It is starting to affect my ability to suspend disbelief - I'm seeing stuff and thinking "yeah that does look like it would pop out of a mold easy."Β Or, in the case of the TIE fighters, "Yeah, no need for new molds for this toy.Β They can use the original TIE fighter molds and only change the color of the plastic being poured in (or the color of the paint, however it's done).Β Cheap toy FTW.
The black TIE fighters are still awesome, but I can't get over this cognitive dissonance that sees a real Millenium Falcon being chased by a toy TIE Fighter.Β
And I feel like we've seen spaceships flying through tight structures too many times now, but that's another issue.

Not as shiny as the chrome troopers, which may not be suited for combat but will make awesome toys!
You know I bet you could save money making these films by eliminating the art department and letting the toy companies design everything.Β You might even get better art (cough Transformers cough).

Visual medium, huh? The medium that shows pilots of space fighters looking through the windows instead of relying only on electronics for flight, right? So, where is the comic complaining about how TIE Fighters block vision on both sides? And it is not like the original SW spaceship designs would ever work in real life anyway. "Oh, no, the new movies changed a design that would never work into a design that would never work, how terrible!"

I missed they merged the turbines of each side to make two out of the four. Damn.
Another thing: Imperial pilots are shown wearing an oxygen mask over the helmet, which originally had it integrated to be plugged to the tubes. I imagine a pilot putting on his uniform, then the original helmet, the oxygen mask, a visor, another helmet and so on until he tips over.

Having been raised seeing the original movies, i have to agree that i don't much care for the X-wings new look; and Abrams does haveΒ a bad habit of redesigning classics for little, if any, good reason.
But something was nagging at me about your logic on the "Turbines"; had to look up the old cutaway diagrams from back in the day, but i found what i was vaguely remembering.
Those "Turbines" are the combined, Electromagnetic Gyros, and Retro-thrust Nozzles, that along with the Differential thrust control on the main engines, are what give the X-wing its legendary maneuverability; the Retro-thrust Nozzles are not dependent on being perfectly round, and the electromagnetic Gyros can be crammed anywhere theirs space for them as long as they remain somewhere in the wings.
I'll admit there's only one practical reason for the new engine shape, reduced aerodynamic profile during atmospheric flight, like what we see them doing in the new trailers; but out in space the different shape is meaningless to performance.
Much like the new Storm trooper armor, the redesigned X-wing is almost certainly a newer model that has replaced the classic T-65 in general use, but its not outside the realm of possibility that a few of the classics may still turn up.
TLDR; I don't like the new X-wing design, but its hardly a deal breaker, the comic is still funny, but those are NOT Turbines.

Well they weren't turbines in the first place, so wow there goes your whole stupid comic huh
And even if they were turbines, that would still make absolutely zero sense, since they're SPACEships and space doesn't, y'know, have any air to go through the turbines in the first place, so they'd be completely pointless. Use some common sense ffs
"film is a VISUAL MEDIUM"
It's also a science fantasy movie made for children with psychic space wizards, laser swords, an unrealistically wide range of alien lifeforms, and loooooooooads of other spaceship designs that would never even come close to working in real life. There's no real world logic applied to anything when it comes to Star Wars, so this one minor design change isn't breaking any kind of lore or established logic. There is none and there never was. You might as well complain about there being no sound space. Basically, this isn't Star Trek. The actual mechanics behind the world were never important. Everything was all in service of the characters, their adventures, and the cool battles. When you pick apart this kind of shit, all it tells me is that you completely missed the point of one of the simplest movies ever made.

Whats interesting is the design is actually a throw back to an early piece of concept art from the original Star Wars film. Which I guess brings up the point that if they didn't use it then...There was probably a reason.

Hey, who cares about stuff like thinking about your designs or your plot when you can just copy surface gloss and trust morons not to be able to tell the difference? That's the J.J. Abrams Way! It worked for Star Trek 90210, right?
(Hell, you don't even have to do more than a half-assed job on copying the gloss, you can compose and shoot the whole thing exactly like any other Abrams movie and copy essentially none of the OT's highly distinctive cinematic language, just so long as you've got designs that look plausibly McQuarrie-ish and you're blaring John Williams!)

This actually made me look up the official 'cross sections' of the ships and figure out what the hell those things are. Apparently there' 'magnetic gyros' That let X-wings turn tighter corners despite technically having no control surfaces (flaps/rudders)
*Shrug* You want to complain about that? How about asking the empire why their fighters don't have landing gears.
