The Orville is better Trek than Star Trek.

Yeah, this sums up my feelings on Discovery pretty succinctly.

Alright, so, not having seen the series, between the outfits and the sci-fi gibbering, I thought this was a Fallout related picture and I was expecting commentary about sexy mods not making sense from a context standpoint.

xerit In reply to Corwyn-Talia [2017-10-18 07:16:46 +0000 UTC]

My first instinct was that they were Mega-City Judge uniforms, from Judge Dredd. And frankly, travel via space-mushroom doesn't seem that far out of the realm of possibility for that series.

Though I'm sure it would be outlawed immediately.

Orville is good. A decent balance between humor and story plot. Too juvenile at times but solid sci-fi stories and good acting.

Discovery is a decent Sci-Fi series, its just not a very good Trek series.  The characters are mostly pretty good and I have to say having a main character who, while admittedly something of a "Mary Sue", has some serious character flaws and made a MASSIVE mistake (which she then compounded even further) is kind of refreshing.  The biggest issue I have is the Klingons.  I understand wanting them to feel alien again, but the departure from established lore was just too great and the makeup is horrible.  It's so thick the actors can't emote though it, hell, they can barely SPEAK through it.

I must confess, Discovery is quite frustrating. The budget is on screen, and looks good. It's at least trying to be something new, but the writing is dog-shit.

Isn't Orville the sci-fi parody/rip off of Star trek by Seth McFarlene?

ExcaliburZ In reply to Iron1Fox [2017-10-20 01:12:08 +0000 UTC]

Orville is a sci-fi adventure/comedy in the spirit of Star Trek. Closer of TNG but with more jokes.

Not really, knowing Seth mcfarlene he has a way of appealing to the lowest common denominator that attracts more people... it's the family guy syndrome.

TheSariff In reply to Iron1Fox [2017-10-23 00:07:31 +0000 UTC]

Honestly you should give it a watch. Ignore episode 1 for the most part, the jokes are a bit hit and miss and seem pushed in at times. -However-, every episode after the first just feels like Star Trek, really. The jokes are slotted in nicely and are not as often as people might think they would be, given it's a Seth show.

You can tell that the show isn't Seth trying to make you laugh, it's not a full on comedy show at all. What you can tell, is that the cast and crew are all passionate about bringing that TGN feel to their show and have it be more... like a love letter, to Star Trek.

Dismissing it right away just because it's Seth is just silly and you will be missing out on something great.

It's actually a great, stand alone sci-fi  show. It pays homage to Star Trek without being strictly a parody. It honestly touches on some pretty serious issues as well.
My wife and I love it. 😍

Zerozero204 In reply to ??? [2017-10-17 18:09:30 +0000 UTC]

I did not expect STD to go full idiot so soon. It was just one scene, perhaps it won't repeat? Perhaps they're smart enough not to ruin the product of an 8 million dollar per episode cost? (They could have funded an entire season and more of Star Trek Continues for 8 million, and have gotten a better tv program than STD.)

Mavraster In reply to ??? [2017-10-17 17:52:24 +0000 UTC]

I've not seen the show, I've not wanted to watch the show after all of the bad mojo surrounding it, like the individual who got the whole production started, stating that they didn't want to be involved with it anymore.

Big red flag in my opinion, especially after they said that they were a big Trekkie.

Good summary though, jj.

EDIT:  Oh, and the abbreviated title, STD.  Bad choice.  Baaaad.

That may be a bad idea right now. That's because the trekkie community is pretty pissed right now about discovery.
