Mm ... not a fan of Seth McFarlane's work of South Park or Family Guy.

Watch the first Three Episodes of Orville. If the third episode doesn't hook you then stop.

It's Battlestar Galactica cosplaying as Star Trek. It's an alright show that stars a massive Mary-Sue, but it's definitely not carrying the Trek legacy of showing us a future worth striving for, a place we'd want to live and people that we'd like to work with.
Ever since 2009, Trek's been all about the flash and explosions and action and revenge plots.
Next time on Star Trek the Next Generation:
- Picard lives a lifetime in his mind, learning about a long dead alien world and also learns to play the flute!
- Data and Geordi match wits with Professor Moriarty on the Holodeck!
- Picard must fight for Data's personal rights as an individual when a Starfleet researcher claims he is nothing but property
- Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra
etc, etc, etc.
Starting in 2009:
- Nero wants revenge on the Federation!
- Admiral Robocop wants to start a war with the klingons while Khan.... wants to be a villain.. I guess?
- Captain edison wants revenge on the Federation for taking war away!
- Oops! We're at war with klingons, and on a black-ops ship that can get away with murder, and where everyone is always arguing.
Slight difference in approach.

The change already started slightly during the last seasons of DS9 when everything revolved around that dominion war. At the same time voyager also changed slightly. Enterprise flopped because of the action-packed but uninspired time war/suliban plot. The directors don't seem to understand that trekkies are more like whovians than Star Wars fans when it comes to scripts.

I loved DS9, VOY, and ENT), personally. I do like story arcs, and they had three advantages over Discovery. Likable and interesting characters that we were more familiar with how they behaved in peacetime, they still reinforced that war was not normal and no one wanted to be involved because of how it affected everything and everyone, and there were still a lot of standalone episodes to break them up.
With discovery, they are giving us 13 episodes to tell a very specific war story. There's no time to dilly dally on character and world development when they're trying to get as much attention and views as possible with action action action.
I do like it for what it is, but it's just not Trek. It's..... Like an action movie 'based on historical events' that the people IN the Trek universe might see.

Amen to that, I watch the first episode of Discovery, couldn't get past how BAD it is. First thing that stuck out like a sore thumb to me was they changed the make-up for the Klingon race to make them even more alien looking. Also changed their culture quite a bit. IIRC, in TNG, Klingon's don't give a crap about your corpse, they dispose of it in the most expedient method possible, not enshrine it on one of their ships. Holographic tech was not a big thing yet, in fact, that Holographic conversation wasn't a thing until late in DS9. To me, Discovery is just a quick cash in, with little to no regard for any established cannon. Hence, I don't watch it. Orville was surprisingly good though, Star Trek Elements, terminology, and such, but with a more modern human feel to the cast of characters, and the occasional fart gag, because hey, Family Guy's creator.

Because of the blue uniforms trimmed in gold, like on Discovery.
Because the characters look like the characters on Discovery.
Because they're talking about the new style of engine they're developing on Discovery.
Because of the random F-bomb on the last episode of Discovery.
Because the tags under the picture reference Discovery.
See the pattern developing here? Why would anyone assume this is an Orville reference?

Cause The Orville's actually good and has kept the humor Seth is known for to an absolute minimum, as well as keeping it brief and relevant to the situation that's happening.

Yeah but The Orville cant decide if it wants to be super serious or just a parody of the TOS tropes so they tone is all over the damn place.

xbsquirrel In reply to Lt-Havoc [2017-10-18 11:15:03 +0000 UTC]
I do get what you're saying, but please hear me out.
I think that it has to have the humor or else Seth may not have gotten the green light as he may be trying to walk a tightrope between what hardcore sci-fi fans expect and what his regular crowd of watchers expects.
I agree that the tone can be a bit sporadic at times, but most of the humor seems (to me at least) more realistic as what to expect in a workplace that's a bit more slack in professionalism. It also feels like by having it take the TOS tropes super seriously and somewhat invert them while trying to say it can also stand on it's own and not completely rely upon ST to be successful.

You obviously don't understand Star Trek then. Humanity, as a whole, has matured beyond the need for dropping swear words unless it's extreme which are hell or dammit. Even Star Trek IV brought up how stupid it is that people need to swear all the time just to get some attention in what they're saying. Look how confused Kirk was in the movie when the guy calls him a dumbass when Kirk almost gets run over by him and he couldn't even come up with a "correct" way of swearing back at him. He says "double dumbass on you!". No one talks like that which shows how alien that way of speaking has become to humans in the future of Stark Trek. I highly doubt that between Discovery and TOS humanity purges the common use of swearing in the way they speak to others.
Just because the people in Trek don't say "fuck" doesn't make them less human. There are far better things about humans than how much we use swear words and this is coming from a guy that swears a lot when he's talking.

I actually like the way they take a story that Trek would do, but then Zig where Trek would have Zagged.
When they find a doomed generation ship that doens't know they're on a ship. Trek "We must save them without disrupting their admittedly shitty culture.: The Orville: "Let's prove it to them. Open the sunroof!"
