A volcano actually. The tremors caused a volcano on Kyushu island to erupt. Apparently it was the biggest eruption the island had seen in 52 years. It spewed ash, rocks and other debris 6,000 feet into the air.

I don't get it what's with the radioactive barrels? The only radiation leaks in Japan to my knowledge have been controlled releases of steam from their nuke plants that contained particles whose half lives were so short you could be walking down the street on the sidewalk opposite the plant and be affected by no more radiation than normal.

You really haven't been paying attention then. Japan has had three explosions just from steam in their nuclear reactors in the last five days, maybe more. I haven't checked the news yet this morning, although on the radio, I heard that even Tokyo is experiencing higher than normal levels of radiation.
today they even had all the workers evacuate the plant for a time until the radiation went back down to normal. all people living within a 20 km radius are being requested to stay in their homes so that they don't breathe the radiation outside.
