I am afraid David Suchet has ruined me for any other portrayals of Poirot.

I'm a fan of Suchet, too, but the cinematography and directing in this film really made it worth it, even if it wasn't Suchet. It has a completely different flavor from the TV series' Orient Express, in a really, really good way.

I might give it a watch but from the trailer I think Branagh's portrayal of Poirot will be a stumbling block, he's quite well described in the books and is such a distinctive character, in my opinion nailed by Suchet, that other interpretations or re-imagining the character will fall flat with me I think.

Makes two of us then. I just saw the BranaghΒ΄s mustache in the trailer and went "No, no way Poirot would have anything but a perfectly groomed and slick mustache."

He is quite specifically described in the books and as such an eclectic character I do not personally take to re-imaginations of him, which Branagh's take seems to be.

I've haven't watched it yet so I'll reserve my judgement until then, but I can assure you Dame Agatha must be spinning on her grave with that terrible choice of a mustache (she's quite particular about it.)XD

There's room in my heart for Branagh's Poirot, next to David Suchet and Peter Ustinov.

The film was enjoyable. It's a shame Hollywood doesn't make detective thrillers / mysteries like this anymore.Β

Haemavore [2017-11-13 03:23:21 +0000 UTC]

Found it quite enjoyable. I still preferred the original movie, but this was more aesthetically pleasing. The long takes, the cinematography (most outdoor shots were CGI), the elaborate costumes were period accurate (snerk; the moustache protector). So what if the handlebar moustache fell off a Fiat or Triumph, rather than a Renault. I also liked the use of the Walking cane as his investigative tool, esp. in Jerusalem. 3.5/5

David Suchet all the way...Β  Even if Branagh has a lovely mustache of his own.

Also, what is with that pop song in the trailer?Β  Seriously, it may be nostalgia but the old Poirot theme song would have been more fitting or at least something more period correct.Β

It already has a 6.8 review on IMDB by users.Β  Consensus seems to be that it was a movie nobody asked for, and the modern music/theme ruined it.

kanyiko [2017-11-13 02:17:43 +0000 UTC]

Still prefer David Suchet's portrayal over the Kenneth Branagh one.

And I've got a major gripe over Ken's moustache - it is nowhere near the typical Belgian moustache of the time (I should know as my great-grandfather was a Belgian refugee to England - AND sported a moustache just like Suchet's Poirot...)

Not if this person is a fan of Suchet's Poirot, or the 1974 version of the movie. No matter how good a movie is, it always loses against nostalgia.

I think my mother is the only exception. She loves cozy mysteries, she's read Agatha Christie, and she loved this version.

Mmmh, I'm a big Poirot fan, both the books and the adaptations, but I'm afraid that with Peter Ustinov and David Suchet as his predecessor, M. Branagh is fighting an uphill battle in order to convince the public. Also, what the hell with the theme at the end of the trailer ? It ruins the mood of the story taking place in the 1930's. I hope it's not in the movie itself.

Branagh's Poirot has a very RAF Regimental moustache... aka, it looks like a couple of squirrels ran up the inside of his nose.

[nope, not going to make any comments about moustache rides and squirrel-girls!]

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm afraid I'd be biased against it from the outset.Β  It would have to be very very good to override my nostalgic love of David Suchet, as well as my fond memories of the original book...and 1974 movie...and the 2006 video game.Β  Even when I first saw the trailer, I was like "oh, are they doing Orient Express again? Interesting.Β  Who'd they get to...wait...who's the gray-haired dude?Β  Where's the white suit and bowler hat?".
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Kenneth Branagh is an excellent actor and I've only heard positive things about the movie...but it's hard for me to get excited about a movie that not only has a such a image of Hercule Poirot...but that I also already know the ending to.Β  That's kind of the tough part of mystery movies.Β  Β

I was thinking the same thing. But that's what Hollywood does - remake shit. They long ago killed off their original writers. Unfortunately, all the remakes are trying so hard to be "different". I still miss Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes.

Perhaps more a movie for peoples new to that story then.

Even if, from what I understand they add more elements to the movie and from what I read they focus the story on Poirot.
