NOT Censored. REDACTED.

dxantonio In reply to Maelstrom44 [2013-11-18 10:46:20 +0000 UTC]

Explain the difference?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Maelstrom44 In reply to dxantonio [2013-11-20 12:13:36 +0000 UTC]

Censoring is the removal/covering up of potentially offensive and/or branded logos/word/images

EG: Blurring a branded shirt in a documentary, or a tactfully placed hamster in a JJ comic preveiw, blur over a slipped pants/bra on Survivor ect, beeping out of profanities.

Redaction is the removal/ covering up of sensitive information that is yet to be declassified and/or names to protect identity.

EG: Military reports made public, and in the case of this pic; classified information in a declassified document.

To settle this argument I decided to go to wikipedia. Posting findings in a reply on the comment below this one.

On a guess i'd say that you censor stuff from other peoples documents and you redact stuff from your own. Also possibly you censor stuff you don't want to be said/written, you redact stuff you don't want to be heard/seen by people without proper clearance.

From wikipedia:Β

CensorshipΒ is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet or other controlling body. It can be done by governments and private organizations or by individuals who engage inΒ self-censorship . It occurs in a variety of different contexts including speech, books, music, films, and other arts, the press, radio, television, and the Internet for a variety of reasons including national security, to control obscenity, child pornography, and hate speech, to protect children, to promote or restrict political or religious views, and to prevent slander and libel. It may or may not be legal. Many countries provide strong protections against censorship by law, but none of these protections are absolute and it is frequently necessary to balance conflicting rights in order to determine what can and cannot be censored.

RedactionΒ is a form ofΒ editing Β in which multiple source texts are combined (redacted) and altered slightly to make a single document. Often this is a method of collecting a series of writings on a similar theme and creating a definitive and coherent work. "To redact" later came to be used in the sense of selecting from or adapting (as by obscuring or removing sensitive information) a document prior to publication or release.[1] Β In the early twenty-first century it has become aΒ euphemism Β meaning "conceal from unauthorized view; censor but do not destroy".[2] Β The word may be used in relation to obscuring or deleting specific information, rather than editing an entire document; e.g. a court may order that the names of people be redacted (from a document).

My conclusion: Redaction is a form of censorship. Which means both terms are correct, although Redaction is the more precise term.

I'm having two visions at the moment: one is an SCP Foundation file on dear Vicky (brought on by all the expunged data), the other is the mental image of her landing in front and to the side of a fleeing criminal and projecting false mass in the way she is doing in the image, causing the criminal to smack into an invisible wall.

Can false mass deflect bullets?

Wouldn't it be better to manipulate the plasma with a magnetic field rather than gravitation. Plasmas usually have very little mass (as compared to their volume) and so gravity has negligible effect on them. Plasmas are inherently charged, and so when moving they are pushed around by magnetic fields.

Also, gravitational field lines don't curve back on themselves like that. Magnetism has two poles, as you have drawn. Gravity is monopolar.

Hmmm being plasma would make that a pretty useless attack in space. Β No air pressure to keep it to itself so It just kinda dissipates, but would be a very pretty Aurora type thing(along with the benefit of protecting her from plasma that isn't the same charge).

HoshikoSoyokaze In reply to paulscott [2013-11-15 23:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually as she is the one in control, it's "pressurized" by her own focus and will. Superpowers in general violate causality (things appearing without a obvious source) so Vicky probably has the same "Licence" to break the laws of physics via some sort of will to power.

Akuma-Lord [2013-11-15 19:37:50 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... looking over what explanation is given (minus convenient redactions) and the little diagram, I noticed that she's manipulated a gravitational field. Is this affected by the relative gravity of her surroundings?

Ie: Would her powers behave any differently in an evvironment simulating Earth's gravity, then in an environment with, say... Mars' gravity, which has 38% Earth's gravity? Or, hell, to be extreme, an environment mimicking Jupiter's gravity, which I think is 250% Earth... I think.

Regardless, does that affect her plasma discharge ability?

Quite the interesting method of explaining her powers friend.

I like how you give away most of it, but hide the bits that would essentially tell the whole idea behind one part of her abilities in a manner similar to government redactions.

Seems like you had fun coming up with all the science behind this character's powers.
