Does this remind you of a certain South Park 2-part episode, "Cartoon Wars"?
I'm afraid that for a long time, the politically correct has won in France (sadly there's no such thing as a local Simpsons/Family Guy/South Park equivalent), and Charlie Hebdo is one of the last ramparts of satire in the country.

Thanks for your support. I remember watching Cabu (one of the murdered cartoon artists, and one of the best) as a kid on children's TV programmes, as he was often there drawing cartoons live, and also made opening & end credit cartoons. And that's so sad to know his life ended this way.

Technically, the quote is "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too" -- the quote you speak of comes from Evelyn Beatrice Hall paraphrasing Voltaire.
But yeah, completely agree with the sentiment.

Too bad Fox, MSNBC, and CNN undermine the 'we shouldn't give into fear' message by refusing to show the cartoons on air.

Here from the States, I offer a gesture of good will to the French - My best of wishes go to the families who have suffered losses to this cowardly act of savagery earlier today, and best of luck to the Police of France and across Europe in catching and bringing these barbaric animals to justice.
Stay strong, France, and Europe.

As much as I like the Malala Yousafzai quote, "Extremists have shown what frightens them most. A girl with a book," that is only half true. They fear people being educated and shown the truth instead of blindly repeating what the extremists want them to. What extremists fear, from the religious extremists to the despotic ones, is being mocked, being laughed at, and being shown to be unimportant and inconsequential instead of in charge and feared.

Nitpick: It's wrongly attributed to Voltaire, instead it's from Evelyn Hall ( sort of writer or friend of some importance to him )
But for the concept itself, I couldn't agree more.
Besides, it's satire... "One of the main purposes of satire is to face off inconvenient problems" M.Moore
There always will be someone who will shout "The king is naked" ( An Italian fairy tale ).

Will admit, read this and was clueless, then went and read several articles about what exactly happened. Made me more confused on top of feeling bad about the tragic events.
But reading a translation of one of the recent(?) most recent(?) cartoons being "Still no attack in France?" "Wait, we have until late January to present our wishes." I'm left confused as to if it was one of those freaky coincidences where it was published the same day? or if their satire actually baited the crazies into actually going through with the threats against them as compared to any of the other large number of groups that get threatened without actions.

i know i'm going to get a lot of shit for this, but nobody seems to be talking about the violence against jews in france. both are very important issues, and one is being looked over and left out.

Well, considering that both violent acts come from the same group of people.....anti-Semitism has been rising all across Europe the last decade.

This is DA - I wouldn't expect to see most social problems discussed in a realistic, rational manner here (and no fault to the artists themselves).

The issue here is not religiously relevant. We are talking about free expression and the right to to speak of your opinion.
I understand your point but it's not really relevant considering this matter.
Plus, I personally think that any people being persecut for their beliefs should be defended and that is not only about jews but Tibetans or Christians in Syria ass well so I'm a 100% with you.

It is during moments like this my grievance of the late Christopher Hitchens flares up.
His involvement in the religious-intolerance crisis was important and inspiring for the rest of us. He passed away all too young during a time we needed him the most.

3 gunmen attacked the offices of a satirical french magazine called Charlie Hebdo in Paris, armed with kalashnikovs and killed 12 people, including 2 cops, as well has gravely wounding at least half a dozen others, after which they yelled " The Prophet has been avanged ".
You can easily find a lot of information on the topic if you search for Charlie Hebdo or the #JeSuisCharlie .

As a fellow european, my sympathies to the french and every honest journalist out there and as an atheist/agnostic my sympathies to non-violent islamic believers all over the world who will undoubtedly be feeling more needless hostility as a result of this.
Finally, and most importantly condolences to all the friends and family of the victims.
Couldn't agree more, thanks for the tiny chuckle JJ.
