France has a less muderings and accidents with fire weapons than the USA. I would say in general it works very good, yes! What happens today in Paris is something different. As we all know it's very difficult or even nearly impossible to deal with such fanatics which are ready to risk everything, even their own lives, to reach their goal!
In conclusion to your posting: if terrorists in the USA are planing an attack, they would be able to buy their guns legally in a shop. And this should be better? I think the opposite is true, it makes it easier! In France they had to acquire the weapons on the illegal way. Which means more efforts and risk of getting caught!
Btw. they also shot down two armed police men! Weapons prevert crimes? Think twice!

eh...... America has almost 5x the population of france so we would automatically have more of everything regardless of pro or anti gun laws. So it's pretty dumb to make a direct side by side comparison.

Sorry to not write it clear in the first posting: of course I was talking about the crime statistic compared to the population (Could it be called the average crime statistic?), which is lower in France than in the USA! Or in other words: The risk for each of us to become victiom of a crime is much higher in the USA than in France.

I can tell you this joke is perfectly fine. This is the kind of humor this journal were fond of and using. Coleagues and artists that were close friends to the cartoonists/journalists who were killed used this kind of dark humor to pay their respects and show the killers and the political ideology behind it that despite the drama of such a act, they are not intimidated nor silenced.

What world does a madman crave to make him to harm others to reach it? what God, what power, what impulse makes him strive to achieve it? That world is unreachable to the rest of us, for only a madman is able to enter it.

Umm... Even AS an American, I fail to see the relevance of that link. France was attacked this time, not us. While I'm proud to be an American, pointing at another country as it is attacked and spouting boasts demeans both them and us.
I find it heartening that the citizens of France are uniting behind their support for the freedom of the Press even in the face of this domestic attack on one of their own publishers.

One little question from someone who understands the basics of french ( Neo-Latin languages have the same root, so it's easier for example for an italian, a spanish ). "France" translated "Free" is derivated from a dialect?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RodinPandarex In reply to mmfree [2015-01-08 06:49:21 +0000 UTC]
Yes ! From an old germanic dialect, the same used by english ! "Free" in english, "Frei" in german => the old french word "Franc" (in modern french, we don't use in main cases this word for "free" but the latin word "liber" => "liberté" in french).

mmfree In reply to RodinPandarex [2015-01-08 10:21:51 +0000 UTC]
If that's the case, then during history French people have largely demonstrated to their "governors" how that is not something to bargain with.
( Picking from a latin proverb "Nomen omen" = "Your name is your fate" )

This is because of the whole "freedom fries" thing some U.S. people did some years back, isn't it?

nitehawk-ltd In reply to Artificer-Urza [2015-01-19 23:06:11 +0000 UTC]
No, that was a tie in with the US Olympics, everyone else in the world calls them 'chips' or 'American' fries.
French fries get their name from a guy named French, not the country.

RodinPandarex In reply to Artificer-Urza [2015-01-07 21:49:52 +0000 UTC]
Nope. "Francs" was an old tribe (5th century). Warriors of this tribe had a special statut : they were "free mens". And settled in a part of the actuel France.
(sorry for my bad english ...)

Hum, I'm sorry to nitpick on those thing, but where have you heard that ? I'm french, and I never heard anything about 'France' meaning 'free'. In french, 'free' is 'libre', and 'freedom' is 'liberté'. So yeah, I think the person who told you that lied to you.

RodinPandarex In reply to zebigdog [2015-01-07 21:46:02 +0000 UTC]
sorry for english people, but it's quite hard for me to explain that in english ...
Si si, je suis français, et je te recommande de regarder plus en détails.
Cela vient du peuple des Francs.
Mini-explication ici => fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/franc#.C3.89tymologie

RodinPandarex In reply to zebigdog [2015-01-08 06:48:09 +0000 UTC]
Oui !
