Description Starfleet may not be strictly a military organization, but as the agency charged with defending the Federation, the role of soldier is one they must often assume. To that end, why not equip Starfleet with a weapon that has a bit more bite; the MK IX Phaser Rifle.

Starfleet may not be military, but the MACO's are.

So I was thinking... How would a suppressor work on an energy weapon?

As  Michael Okuda said when asked how the heisenberg compensator worked, it works "very well, thank you."

--Just some ideas, based on the idea of reducing rather than eliminating the detectable visual, auditory, and EM signatures of an energy weapon.

I could probably rattle off some technobable about force fields being used to compress and dissipate the air being effected around the muzzle, in order to reduce the noise.

Some sort of visual masking fields, not true cloaking tech, could be used to reduce the initial visual burst of fire from the weapon...instead of being cloaked completely, you get that "predator effect" when the weapon is fired, at least initially...once the shot is, say a meter from the muzzle, the shot passes beyond the masking field and can be fully seen.

You might even be able to include some sort of EM dispersion tech that reduces the actual energy signature of the weapon...probably not fully masking it, but rather making it look like a smaller 'caliber' weapon...a hand phaser instead of a larger rifle.

Very good ideas, and a little farther than I would have BS'ed.  Also sorry about the late reply.

Regarding the EM dispersion idea, that sounds like something that would be more extensive than just something attached to the end of the barrel, like a covering over the weapon that can be taken on or off.  Not necessarily the entire rifle, just around the barrel (maybe a barrel switching option) and maybe the power cell.  You could combine this with a suit that blocks sensors and you'd have the 24th century equivalent of a gillie (sp?) suit.  Maybe even going one step further and add a holographic projection system (I'm guessing that's what those duck blind suits from Insurrection were) and render someone invisible as well.  (Also IIRC there were phaser shots during that scene at the beginning that were coming from seemingly nowhere due to those suits.)

Also regarding masking the beam/bolt, since it's an energy/particle projectile you could theoretically manipulate the wavelength of the beam/bolt so that its outside the visual range of whoever it is your up against (say up into the ultraviolet range).  Or even alter the wavelength of the beam to change the color, say a black ops/Section 31 mission you could change the color of the beam to green and make the Klingons think they're fighting other Klingons or even Romulans (as a rough example).  Granted it wouldn't hold up to post-op scrutiny, but then again some groups wouldn't be as thorough as Starfleet would be.

Thanks. And yeah, I'm trying to get in the habit of including little easter eggs or some little personal touch to my work.

Now that is what they should have!!! Instead of the flimsy TV remote lookalikes.

That was indeed the idea behind this. Give those Starfleet boys something that actually looks like a rifle, not some plastic toy. I'm going to change up a few parts like the barrel, possibly add a suppressor and continue the detail work. Hope to have more soon.

By all the gods of heavy ordnance and oversized calibers, Go forth and create!!!
