I'm still not sure how I feel about it's appearance, but this is the Paint drawing I've made to illustrate the concept of the XM2 phaser in it's PDS configuration which is explained in my writeup about the XM2. The original muzzle and type 1 phaser are shown below for comparison. This configuration gives the phaser more range and firepower and since the components can be stored in a compact carrying case, it creates a more size-efficient unit compared with a standard phaser rifle. Crew members, particularly security personnel, have the option of keeping this kit stored somewhere nearby their post in case of an emergency. It can also stored in it's case while on an away mission during which extra firepower may come in handy but a full-sized compression phaser rifle would be too cumbersome or seem overly imposing.
