Description
My FAL semi-automatic battle rifle as it hangs on the wall above my bed. The carry handle makes it easy to just hang it up there without needing a gun rack. The FN-FAL has been around since the 1950's and used throughout the world. My FAL uses an L1A1 barrel and gas system and an inch pattern receiver, typical to British commonwealth rifles. The lower receiver ( which is off a full-automatic G-1 ) and stocks are all metric pattern. The rifle fires the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, feeding from a 20-round magazine.Related content

How does the FN FAL compare to its contemporaries, e.g., the Heckler & Koch G3 and the M14, with regards to accuracy, reliability, and ergonomics (ease of use)? I've yet to fire any of them, but a pro-German bias makes me favor the G3, when deciding which weapon to put in the hands of characters from my fanfics.

Sigh... it's a sad fact that any stock photo of a firearm on Deviantart contains the following:
1. Assumption that it's an airsoft gun.
2. A post consisting of complete ignorance of US Gun laws.
3. Gun Control debate of some type.
Personally, I'd love an FAL, but my budget just won't let me buy a $1500+ DSA and I'm resolved to never buy an Century Arms product again. I have three guns that Century monkeyed with and two of them were very messed up when purchased as NiB. No complaints about my Yugo however and... uh-oh. KNOCK ON WOOD!!!!!! It is kind of depressing that so many guns on DA are just air rifles, deactivated weapons, or airsoft guns standing in for the real deal.

Awsome gun but y do u need a Fal? I know u can't use it for hunting cuz it holds more than 6 rounds which is then considered a machine gun ( even thou it's semi automatic ) which is illeagle

I own a FAL because it's a very historic, powerful, and well-built rifle. A Class-3 machine gun in this case would be represented by a rifle who's receiver is cut for a part called an "auto-sear" which enables fully automatic fire in this particular weapon. My rifle is not made in this way and in this configuration, it is simply a semi-automatic rifle. This certainly isn't the case in places like California, but I live in the southeast. Here, the magazine capacity has nothing to do with it, but it does make it unacceptable for hunting. I personally don't hunt and never had that in mind so it's not an issue for me. The FAL wasn't designed to maintain the wildlife population; It was designed to wage war.
For me, acquiring a FAL wasn't a question of "need" but a question of "want." Of the things that people typically spend hundreds of dollars on, very few of them are really "needs." But, when it comes to application, the FAL is a service rifle and can provide hours of fun recreational shooting. If the unthinkable should arise, it fills the role for which the 2nd Amendment was originally created to protect. Some of us today refer to this as "the preservation of liberty."

I paid a hefty $600, plus $50 or so for replacements parts such as the gas tube, receiver cover, and metric forearm as seen in the picture. The gun was a mismatched mess and I really paid too much considering the problems that it had initially. However, the fact that I was able to correct these problems with my own two hands saved me from wasting money that would have hardly been worth the time and effort. For the time being, I'm content with owning the gun I basically had in mind all along without paying twice as much for a professionally built rifle. A comparable rifle like this from DSA retails around $1,200 or more.

Oh, no... I don't own any airsoft guns. The parts I was describing are FN-FAL parts. Yes, it's strange, but REAL rifles had their receivers cut in half, the remains of which were either sold as scrap metal or shipped to the U.S. as parts kits. People would buy a receiver ( the "chassis" of the gun ) and build a rifle around that receiver using these retired former-military rifle parts and thus created legal, semi-automatic rifles. My rifle was built, but unfinished, with numerous problems which were left in disrepair.
The gas tube, for example, is a tube which contains a piston which is forced back by the burning, expanding gases which pass into it when it bullet travels down the barrel. The gas forces the piston back, and starts the bolt carrier in motion to towards the rear. The gas tube in mine was stripped, thus the blast simply blew out through the opening and did not move the pistol so my gun functioned as a single-shot rifle which would have to be manually cycled after each shot. I replaced the gas tube, and this fixed the problem. I also took off the scope mount picatinny rail ( which was mounted too loosely anyway ) and installed a military-style dust cover in it's place, and past that I made a couple cosmetic changes such as replacing the inch forearms with metric forearms and painted and/or blued certain components to a matching shade of black.
The CETME rifle you mention is another type of rifle, the forerunner to the H&K G3. For rifles in this caliber, the CETME G3 is a close competitor to the FN-FAL, though either are much more affordable than the very expensive, although deadly accurate, M14/M1A.

wait a second WAIT A SECOND i thought this was someone else's reply! XD sorry i was stuck on my ipod for a while and couldnt watch pictures. I thought you were some guy that had an airsoft FAL and yeah.... but anyhow yeah the FAL is sicker than fuck! About that piston thing - my yugo m59/66 has a gas valve that did the same thing until i replaced it. When you pull back the receiver it kinda sticks so when it unsticks it FLIES back and the empty shell will cut yur knuckles sumthin fierce!
HOT damn! friend me?

LOL, yeah I'm glad I'm keeping my FAL. I didn't really want to get rid of it but I almost did to get me some Christmas money. Yeah, that Yugo sounds like an SKS variant, I believe. I think I used to see those priced pretty reasonably at one time. I should have bought one. Some had grenade launchers...? Well, you know, like a muzzle thing not a "thumper." Sure, I'll add you here on DA.
