Description
In 1958-1968, the Iraqi nation experienced an interesting historical phase: after the 14 July Revolution had broken up the monarchy and the federation with Jordan, which is to this day a monarchist state, a socialist state was established under the leadership of the army brigadier Abd al-Karim Qasim. Himself of Kurdish-Arab origin, he tried to forge a model of civic nationalism for Iraq that did not discriminate on the grounds of Kurdish or Arab identity. Qasim furthermore had the idea of annexing Iranian Kurdistan, Khuzestan as well as Kuwait to his country. Internal tensions led to Qasim's removal and then killing by the Nasserist-influenced Abd as-Salam Arif in 1963.
