Description
This relatively unsophisticated looking firearm was developed by Outlaw Tek technicians to be issued to would-be revolutionaries on worlds where corporate interests were so oppressive that revolution was in the air. Operating out of highly secret locations, Outlaw Tek personnel would build these weapons in their hundreds of thousands and then secretly and covertly went to worlds where the system of administration was so strict, so debased in its treatment of its citizens, that they were ripe for recruitment. These were people who wanted to overthrow the oppressive corporate collar about their necks, but didn't have the firepower to make it work. Outlaw Tek provided that firepower.Of course, they trained up would-be leaders and then issued them with the weapons. They in turn issued the weapons to their followers. Although the authorities called these people terrorists, the fact is they were only targeting the abusive sentinels who make their lives a misery, and acting to prevent that. The firearm itself was a simple enough fabrication consisting of a frame into which was mounted a energy compression coil assembly. This in turn was linked to a single-use power pak located in the weapon's butt. When the trigger was pushed, the weapon released a beam of energy that was stabilized at the point of emission by two conductor rods. This beam had an effective range of forty meters after which it lost cohesion and power.
The weapon could be fired a total of six hundred forty-two times (on average) before its pak was exhausted, and the weapon was then useless, so it was simply discarded having served its purpose. Despite its name, there was no stun setting - every shot was intended to kill. In cases where unsuccessful rebellions had taken place, the authorities found themselves with thousands of these weapons that were designed to explode, violently if any attempt was made to examine them or dismantle them. The weapon was nicknamed the 'freedom' by those who used it.
