Here’s how I think the plot will work:
A grumpy mainland countryside teenager named Willie (Noah Jupe) comes to Sodor to be in charge of the railway while Sir Topham Hatt is on holiday. Thomas (Tom Holland) learns that Willie once admired coming to Sodor as a child, so he decides to be "really useful" by taking Willie on a fantastic journey around the island to turn his life around and rediscover the joys of life on Sodor. However, they learn that Diesel (Andy Serkis) and a mysterious World War enforcer (Rupert Friend) are plotting against the engines. So Thomas and Willie must save the day and stuff. Then Thomas and Willie learn who the mastermind is; a corrupt railway investor/engineer (Mark Gatiss) who was using Diesel and the enforcer to carry out his plot in destroying the engines with gunpowder-contaminated coal, taking all of the land on Sodor, and then fulfilling diesel domination. Then, Thomas and Willie foil his plot and chase down the evil engineer (who uses a dynamite-loaded handcar as an escape vehicle), and then a redeemed Diesel shows up and defeats him by sending the engineer and his handcar plummeting off a crumbled railway bridge. It then ends with Sir Topham Hatt (Anthony Hopkins) returning from holiday, Willie deciding to remain on Sodor as a stationmaster while dating with his new love interest, and the engines being back on track. Suddenly, we see the bad guy from the Alec Baldwin movie in the post-credits scene.
