I might say the skull and brain sit outside the painting, because of their small size relation to the rest of the image. I might say the fur of the primate needs to be pushed more towards either the graphic quality of the arms, or the realistic texture of the iguana. I might add that the light blue, knife-like shape rising above and behind the skull is unnecessary; or the neuron cliché; or the blood cells derivative.

But as I look more into this painting, I ignore and discard my original inhibitions. This painting is brilliant in its random control. It is structured chaos, in the best sense. As an artist who fears he is diving head-first into a world of uninspired, monotonous, cookie-cutter imagery, I am finding this painting refreshingly humorous, technically engaging, and skillfully applied.

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to crit this.

If you're interested here is what this one looked like more than a year ago:

Looking back now at the imagery I used, I definately agree that it's on the cliche side. For some reason though I felt it still has a certain quirky charm that I like. This is one of those ones that I felt I never quite resolved so I thought it might be interesting to see what I could do with it after all this time. Again thanks for your helpful insight.

Honestly, I like both versions. The white and black forms are strong textural elements that help tie the piece together. And for a person of your skill, cliché is not a concern. Cliché is a word used by teachers to keep students from making amateur paintings. You are neither amateur nor cliché.

I've spent the last three months resolving pieces I'd made earlier this year. Deciding what to keep and what to conceal is very tough and highly subjective, and the end result can be rewarding or frustrating. Intentionally suspending a piece for a later date is smart-- your future self will be able to resolve problems your past self couldn't recognize.

The painting may not be where you want it to be, but hopefully it's better than what it used to be.

Very interesting! I might have to look at some of my other older paintings now and see if I could spiff them up any, or at least make use of parts of them. Again thanks for your insight.
