Description
This is the Katana I've been working on recently. It's my own custom Katana, with a Tsuba I designed.
I also decided to make a scabbard for this one, which was challenging, but I'm very please with the results.
This was also my first attempt at handle wrapping which came out very well.
At the moment, I haven't named the Katana, so if anyone can think of a good name for it then please say.

To be honest this isn't made very well.
I would advise you do use PirateCaptains tutorials.
He makes beautifull swords in much greater detail, and he's made a bunch of video tutorials.

To name a weapon one must know the purpose if it.
Is it for Revenge or redemption?
Does it value the spirit of regality or righteousness or βripping someone to little pieces simply because you CAN!β?
What inspired you to design the tsuba the way you did, to choose wrapping the colour of snow, and an obsidian sheath?
Only can a worthy title be derived when all these questions have been answered
or you could get lazy and call it βThe Four Diamonds of Frostβ or something.

I used the japanese -> english translator and came up with "Kirei Koori", meaning "clean ice", although it may have a more subtle translation to a native speaker.
I liked the way "Onara Tama" sounds, but I doubt you'd want to name your excellent sword "Fart Bullet".
"Shiro Kahen" translates to "White Petal" and from what I've seen, many animes and mangas seem to name their swords in a similar fashion.
Hopefully there's something here that either you like, or sparks an idea for you. Nice looking sword BTW.

It looks wonderfully crafted, I'm actually trying to start making wooden swords as well...
Anyways...a name...Since it is a katana it deserves a japanse name...how about...Nanashi? It means "Nameless"

Well if it isnt my good friend Awaken-Benihime and yet another sword he unveils to us with the upmost quality and precision O.O theres not much more I can say, this is beautifull clean work, with the tsukamaki being top notch. Very clean and patient work and that you made a scabbard how it is actually suppose to be shaped is amazing XD As a swordmaker of course I have questions ^^
You used a polyeurathane varnish i saw a can of that its suppose to give bare wood a thin protecting coating, I didnt know it works on painted surfaces aswell amazing!
It seems you are following the correct engineering of a real katana, though the quest to make a cap for the end of the hilt is still underway. With a cap a hole can be drilled through the end of the hilt where the tsukamaki can run through with the cap sealing the end. I only know one swordmaking on this site who has done that successfully XD
Is the sword blade straight of curved? im having trouble guessing with the view angle I would love to know XD
You shall receive a note later about some help in knowledge I need ^^

Thanks for the compliments mate
Yeah, a couple of years ago I helped my brother spray paint his guitar. We then needed to seal it, and proceeded to spray on some gloss, but this caused the paint to run.
It seemed to dissolve the paint. So we searched alternative glosses, and we came across the Polyurethane Varnish.
I've since used it to coat my projects.
This is the one I use [link]
I was tempted to close the hilt off like that, but I couldn't think of a material to use to create the cap.
The blade is indeed curved, you can see it better in the close ups.
The sheath is made from two different thickness pieces of wood. I had to plain the thicker pieces to make it roughly double the thinner piece. Then carved the slot using a chisel.
I actually had a lot of fun carving this. Got a brand new chisel for this, and boy am I glad I did, it made swift work of it.

I have seen this Polyurethane Varnish on sale just not with the brand plasti-cote XD you think this will work on metallic paints?
People say get 2 thick small pieces of wood, get a dremel and rake out the insides. Then combine both of them together again and you have kind of a cap.
If that blade is curved then the sword is alot more awesome XD
new chisels are expensive I wish I had the money to dish out on some XD

Mainly pine wood, with a bit of balsa wood on the tsuba, and basswood on the handle.

Sorry to bother you but I'm really interested, please stand me a bit more XD
Since it's all made out of wood isn't it easily breakable? I mean... uhm... well if a kid played with it would it break? (Sorry for stupid example but nothing better came to my mind XD)
And more or less how much the weight is?
Thanks a lot for your time, I really am hopelessly curious XD

JonsProjects In reply to master-of-words [2008-09-16 08:15:52 +0000 UTC]
It's not built for combat, it's a prop.
And since it's made from mostly pine wood, it's very light.
I'd say it's probably half the weight of my first sword, which was made from plywood.

Cut and paste job from Wikipedia
"A theatrical property, commonly referred to as a prop, is any object held or used on stage by an actor for use in furthering the plot or story line of a theatrical production"
Although mine isn't going to be used in any play or anything, it's just for show.
The blade is pretty weak and wouldn't take much to break.
If you wanted to make one slightly more battle worthy then use a stronger wood, or maybe a good quality plywood.

omg where on the sword would you use plywood?! O.O!
Plywood shears off when you sand itttttttt! thatd be almost as bad as using mdf board for the blade!
if you want it stronger... use like.. oak or something. >.>

Yeah, Benihime had a plywood blade. I had to do a lot of filling when bits sheared off, but it still turned out well.

I hope you plan on putting more pictures up! I really like it, the handle wrap looks good, and the finish seems very clean and sharp. I'm interested in what you used as a finish for the sheath as well if you don't mind sharing secrets. Very cool!

I'll take some closer photos at different angles and put em together.
I used Black Satin finish spray paint for the sheath, finished with a spray varnish.
You can actually see the grain of wood which I found strange, as I did spray a white coat primer, but it looks quite good.
I'm more than happy to sharing my techniques
