Description
This picture I've been literally working on (on and off) for nearly two years. The idea comes directly from the "Knights of the Old Republic" video game itself. When your character (Revan) goes to the Jedi Academy on Dantooine and starts training to become a Jedi, you're able to explore the world. There is this beautiful spring (which I did absolutely no justice here
That idea lasted for about half a year. I really couldn't sketch anything I was happy with. Then I just simplified it down to it just being Revan. Even still, I could not come up with a pose for Revan that would cover the important parts, well at least the top part, I knew I wasn't going to have any problem covering the bottom half. But I wanted to use her lightsaber to do it. It was extremely difficult trying to line up "everything" perfectly. And even now it's not a perfect allignment. Which actually turned out better since it shouldn't be perfect.
Revan has become a very important character to me. If I was going to do a nude pic of her I wanted to do it right. Even the pic I did of Revan in her underwear was more lighthearted and fun than anything. I wanted this picture to be . . . "honest" (for want of a better word). If Revan were taking a moment to relax in a spring and sensed danger would she reach for her clothes first or her lightsaber?
This is only the second time I "painted" a background with Paint Shop without using the "pencil" tools. The only things I drew in the pic were Revan herself, the bit of plant life, and the rocks she's touching. The first background I paitned was in my Katara pic [link] and even then I used the "pencil" tool or a pre-shape to do the moon. The waterfall gave me the biggest problem, and I most certainly overdid it
Revan's pose took a very long time to come up with. And I cannot stress how much I relied on 's photos for reference, in particular this series featuring this model [link] which you can find in their "classical nudes" gallery. It wasn't until maybe three and half weeks ago that I finally drew what would become my final sketch (this one) and the pose itself doesn't come from any specific photo. I came up with it myself, but I could not have made Revan's body look like this without those photos, so much love to and the beautiful Carly Champagne
And is it just me or does Revan kinda look like Megan Fox? Not a bad thing at all, but totally unintentional.
And yes she is anatomically correct, so for now I have no plans in posting the lineart.

I know what you mean. My first Revan was actually one of the brunettes with the ponytail. It wasn't until I started drawing Star Wars art that I chose the black haired model with the long bangs and ponytail.

WOW! I think that there should be a bit more green in the background - because this is Dantooine but... Yay for naked Revan lady with a big saber!
Malak - is that you again?!

Yeah, but I wanted to put Revan against a darker background to better have her stand out as well as the water of the falls.

Simply amazing man.
You should try and branch out on doing some near human races like Zabraks and Kiffar, maybe even Miraluka. That would be awesome to see.

Thanks.
I do like drawing other species, though I haven't drawn that much other than my Twi'lek Jaden. I've only drawn one Zabrak and Visas a few times, but I haven't tried a Kiffar yet.

Well, the Exile does spend the first couple of hours of the game in her underwear, and I actually do have a couple pics planned for her during that time

Worth the time it took you, Joseph?
I like this one on several levels. For one, I can never get wet hair to look right. I like seeing someone who can. For another, the background and the mist soming off of same. And obviously I'm a Star Wars enthusiast and a fan of KotOR in particular.
In that order, mind you.

Ha, yeah, I so agree with Dark Maniac. Why worry about your state of undress when somebody's trying to kill you outright? Lightsaber first, then the bra after you've sliced your attacker in half.

No point in trying to defend the sexual aspect with practicality. I don't see a problem with it, honestly, unlike some here. Might as well just throw out half of all art if you find it offensive to use women provocatively.
Whatever the case, the anatomy is done quite well, and it does possess an uncanny resemblance to Megan Fox. The only criticism I can think of is the waterfall in the background. The brush on the edges repeats itself annoyingly. It's rather easy to ignore, however.

I thank you for your comments.
And yeah, the way artistic value differs from person to person, the same can be said about what some may find gratuitously sexual or offensive.
And a sharp eye on the waterfall, I did use the same type of "airbrush stroke" method. Actually I used the "eraser" as an airbrush for the edge of the water. Painting the water did give me a lot of problem. Hopefully, I'll have improved when the next opportunity to paint water comes along.

Very nice drawing, Joe. I have no problem with Revan's nakedness since, after all, she was swimming and not posing for Playboy Magazine or shooting a porn film. Also, as you pointed out, many people enjoy skinny-dipping. And the pose is non-sexual enough to keep it, well, let's say discreet enough to dodge accusations of being pornographic. That is, of course, unless you think the lightsaber is little too phallic for your taste.
I took figure drawing in college where we sketched nude live models. Granted, it was a bit of a shock, but I adjusted. How can you draw the human body if you don't know what it looks like? If you don't, then any drawing of people you do will look like crap and the clothes won't hang on their bodies convincingly.

JosephB222 In reply to Leppardra [2009-08-19 04:58:14 +0000 UTC]
Well, a lightsaber is a very phallic object no matter what, there's nothing that can be done about that , but then the same can be said for normal swords, and .... the Washington Monument
You just have to go with it.
And it's not so much the pose that makes this non-sexual but Revan's expression. Personally I find it more sensual when things are hidden or kept a mystery. But I could change Revan's expression and turn this exact same pose into something very sexual, at the same time I could change the pose into something full frontal and kept this expression and, at least to me, it would still be as non-sexual as it is now.
And while I do think it's a good idea to have a sense of proper human anatomy, I draw my characters with an (if only slightly) exaggerated anatomy. This picture is probably the first in many years that I actually tried for correct anatomy.

Holy Crap! This is gorgeous! I love the pose, the lighting...everything. So well done! Her face is different, but still very lovely!
I have to admit, this is probably my fave from you thus far! Revan is important to me as well, I can understand where you are coming from. Dude pat yourself on the back for a job done Hell'ah good!

Thank you, that's sweet of you to say
If there is one thing that I'm not completely happy with, is that I couldn't make Revan look much like she does in my other drawings of her. Without being able to do her regular hairstyle it was difficult to make her recognizable as my Revan without putting in the title that "this is Revan" . I tried to add the usual blue highlights I color her hair, but it just didn't look right with the "wet" look I was going for. My Revan also has a big nose, but there wasn't much I could do with that from this angle of her face.

She still looks gorgeous. You can tell she's your Revan, for me, I think her face is just more round than usual. But yet this is still my fave

Good pose I forgot to add. I can't do human anatomy half as well. What is your secret? Hours of practice? Raw talent? I do like the art, just not the naked part.

I understand. I wish I could say it was just raw talent, but I've been drawing since I was about four years old (doodles, scribbles, stick figures such as they were ) and I'm 36 years old now. And as I said in my comments I relied heavily on photos for reference for this picture. But I use whatever I can find, whether from magazine, movie, tv shows, and other artists works. I study what looks good to me.

Ah, same here! I'm 25, and been drawing since I could put pen to paper. I did it in school, I did it at home, I do it everywhere and anytime. I still have a lot to learn, it seems. Especially anatomy and shading. Any suggestions? (check out my latest please - I badly need some critique)
I used to not draw humans at all, but I've started doing it just to practice. I've only taken one art course, in college. I just keep drawing and trying to learn.
Thank you for displaying your fantastic art. Keep it up.

I'm still learning myself.
I too used to stay away from drawing humans at first. But I finally started drawing them when I was about 12 or 13 (I don't count any of the stick figures I drew before then ) And having been mostly self-taught I can only advise on some of the things that helped me learn. The main thing that helped me was just drawing what I saw. I used to record some of my favorite shows back then, He-Man and Transformers (and this was with a first generation VCR
) and I would pause the show and draw which ever character on the screen exactly as they appeared. Those drawings always looked better than anything I did on my own. I would do the same thing with comic books. Just draw what I saw as exactly as I could. Eventually I got better drawing on my own. But even now I still sometimes use reference material, such as with this pic.
The book "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" really helped me during my late teen years when it came to drawing poses and especially learning about depth perception, and horizon points.
