Description This is another shot from my day of working on the homelessness project.

There is one huge reason why I chose this as one that I would submit to deviantART. The image to me, displays an enormous explanation of the reality of the homeless in the modern world. The center of attention in this image is not the man, but the cane reasting in the foreground. The perfect symbol of a handicap. I composed this so that the man and the cane are the only true subjects in this image...naturally connecting the two together in the concept. This man, like millions of homeless, is handicapped...but unlike many quickly assume, the handicap does not belong to him. Just as this cane doesn't belong to him, as it is several dozen yards up the street, the handicap that he suffers from is well out of his realm of ownership. He is a victim of a handicap that we as a society have control of, and in result, have possession of. Choosing to ignore it though, is the most simplistic method of disconnecting ourselves from it. Allowing him to mellow in it, in something that he is obviously connected to, and without the choice to seperate himself from, we successfully create a false reality that homelessness and poverty are things that he somehow inflicted upon himself, and so must somehow reconcile himself. It is not our responsibility because we have nothing to do with it. By simply changing the angle though, we could easily capture the true, larger picture of this situation...and in turn would be forced to change our percetption of it, and maybe even look for the ways that we could fix it. I can only hope that this is the result, because as a group of people we have created this oppressive condition, and only as a group of people accepting the conviction of it, can we ever relieve the victims. I feel lucky that the word "Aperitivi", meaning a pre-dinner alcoholic drink, happened to fit into this image as well, because it only adds to the ideal misconception that we create about this condition. That alcoholism is one of the reasons that these people are homeless. When in reality it is merely a way that they try to cope with the nightmareish conditions that they must live day in and day out. Again, a simple change in angle would remove this from the scene as well.

For these reasons, I feel that there could not have been a better way to capture this shot.

Full view would be much better!

Beautifully done picture. The composition combined with the heartfelt explanation pulls the piece to a more meaningful presentation. Great depth of field on the cane to make it more of an idea than an "in your face" concept. I disagree with the thought on homeless people, but as far as the picture is concerned you did a marvelous job.

Thank you for the kind words. As far as disagreeing though, I am sorry to hear that. I was simply stating the truth, less so than just an opinion.

You're quite welcome It's alright everyone is entitled their own opinion. I know that its hard to get out of poverty and off the streets. I also know that drinking is a means to help the pain, however drinking doesnt get the person motivated to go try and get a job. I dont know about other places in the world but where I live they have assisted living areas where they provide you a place to live, food to eat and jobs to work. If you dont work then you choose to live in the streets, if you cant work then you are provided welfare. Life isnt easy but the harder you work at it the better the results will be eventually. You just have to keep trying. But again, the picture in and of itself was wonderfully done

Thank you, that is very interesting info. They don't provide that type of support in most places though, unfortunately.

Quite welcome. All my point really was, is that where there is a will there is a way. Anyone, with very few exception, can get out of a bad situation. They just need the drive to find a way- even joining the army as bad as that might be provides some means of money, backpacking to some place and finding a crappy job. Its not fun, its not easy but there are ways but most people in a bad spot are so over whelmed and or depressed that they find it impossible when its not.
