Description This is a just a simple technique I played around with displaying how flash photography can be used for a number of effects in photography.

This picture is unedited. It is just as it was on the camera. To do this I just manually set the shutter speed to a long exposure. In this case, 20 seconds. I also made sure I set a moderate aperature, focused on infinity, and changed my ISO to 800. Once I opened the shutter (I waited for a car to pass), I went to three different places in the frame, and fired an unmounted flash that I carried with me, downards towards the ground. The flash properly exposed and froze the stance I was taking, and allowed me to move on to the next position without blurring in the frame. This is a simple effect compared to everything you can do, simply playing around with a flash and long exposures. Give it a try

For this I used a Nikon SPEEDLIGHT SB800 flash, on test mode. Feel free to comment!

haha- That is a really fun idea! And I definately agree that composition-wise it is the car lights that pull it together. I need to get me one of them unmounted flashy thingies so I can try a bit of that!

Wow I love this.

If I can give some serious critique. The composition works really well. The the car light trail cutting across diagonally creates a horison line and gives depth to the triangular composition of the three you's. I think without that line then it would be too flat. My only negative is that it would be even more stunning if the camera had been tilted up slightly and got as much night sky as foreground. But then hey, so much of what you done here had to be down to complete randmomness.

This is definately a fav and will be on my fav list forever.

Thanks a lot for the comment Pete! I agree with everything you said. I had to wait about 15 minutes for a car to come by...the line does add a lot to the picture though so it was worth it. I also wished I could have gotten some sky in the picture, but, across the street is actually forest...so the sky is about another 40 feet up above the tree line. Wasn't really possible considering the location. Again, thanks!
