Description Gangs of the Gayborhood

Please, view in full! And please read on...

An exaggerated title. Nonetheless, Philadelphia has been receiving a lot of praise in recent years for being, arguably, America's most tolerant city. It holds an annual equality forum where all bureaus discuss issues like homosexuality, racism, gender inequalities, poverty and social injustice. There is, as you can see simply from my own work, a lot of room for improvement, but in all honesty, there are a lot of impressive things going on in the city. For one, the new citywide wireless internet project has opened internet access to all residents--the first city in the world to do so.

The "Gayborhood" is the official name given to two city blocks in South Philly. The name is simply playing off of humor, although it is one of the most popular areas for gay residents. The street signs there are multicolored, representing tolerance and acceptance. As a whole, the entire population is impressively showing its willingness to discuss new ideas, new visions, and as a result...new hope for cities altogether. It's not something new, either. But it is something that has been missing in Philadelphia and most of the world for over a hundred years. It's what made Philly the largest and most popular city in the Western Hemisphere for nearly a hundred years before that. It's openness. It doesn't represent a lack of morals--but instead it represents a wealth of tolerance and love. The desire to welcome brothers and sisters, despite color, belief, nationality or income. I'm excited to see such a growing number of open minds and hearts, and what comes from it.

This shot isn't really from the Gayborhood. It's from North Philadelphia. The guy may have been a little intimidating but the colors he chose to represent brought a warm smile and a chuckle to us. It also made me think of this new evolving meaning that we put into color altogether. A simple moment, I know, but it is connected to a wonderful idea.

Sounds amazing what they're doing there. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to go visit up there because now I'm curious. Nice shot too.

Even before reading the backstory, I was laughing out loud at the photo and title.
