This is Jimmy Obrien. He is homeless, and I spent the afternoon with him today. I have debated several times with others on deviantART over opinions on the homeless. All of these debates are usually the same, and educated and intelligent person will argue me that the homeless are there because they have made mistakes. Period. Some will admit that social forces have placed them there, but will undoubtedly add that if they wanted out badly enough, they would be. And that they are ignorant people, not worth listening to because they have nothing smart or beneficial to offer. Everytime this arises, I argue a different position. You can read my descriptions on other recent pictures if you want to hear that position.

I wish everyone on deviantART who feels the way that those I have debated with do, would hear the conversation we had with Jimmy today. It would make many people realize how ignorant and egocentric they can be. The insight he had to offer. The knowledge that he had on so many issues. Atop the admittance of past addictions to drugs and alcohol, he showed his solid understanding of how bad it was, and why it is so hard for so many in his situation to break away from it. Before a person assumes that they understand a situation, I wish that they would take the time to talk to the people who just might understand it a little better.
