Description Sounds of Silence
North Philadelphia, PA. USA

Ridge Avenue, a typical street in North Philadelphia; home to two-hundred thousand predominantly African American families served by a number of under-funded, over-populated schools.

Is there a message in the silence?

There absolutely is a message. I know where this is as I live and go to school in North Philly. I hope to teach in the inner-city.

Urban decay of a kind we don't see much in Australia - we tend to hide ours in remote areas.

We just hide ours by looking the other way

Thank you for your thoughts. This is actually a part of a larger essay that I will be working on. I feel like giving the surroundings, this framing was the best way to keep this particular building the center of focus. I also prefer to have series like this be uncropped, so a squarish framing wouldn't really be an option. Thanks again

Poverty always slps us in the face when we see it.

Walking through neighborhoods like this that use to be thriving places before sprawling segregation came along- there somehow seems to be an eloquent beauty found in the degradation of buildings and man's creations. It should remind us of our temporal and fragile nature. It seems to be ignored to me though. Maybe the slap comes...but it comes slowly like a creeping rash...we never seem to learn our lessons very fast. I say the world needs more photographers taking real pictures to remind us all that everything isn't alright...as the pictures on GQ and Vogue would have us believe.

Vogue used to have quite a social conscience once upon a time. Especially over here in Europe. It used to run features on subjects like poverty and war. Interestingly this was also a time when there sales were at an all time though. The lesson they learned is that they need to supply to the demand and the demand isn't (and no doubt ever will be) for images that make us feel guilty about our own success.

I think this is very much the human condition and will be the very thing that will eventually see us removed from our throne on this planet.

This is absolutely beautiful. I am somehow enchanted by the broken cities where we live.

Thank you Rob...I feel it too. Perhaps we could take a photo outing in the city one day.

It is excellent how well you captured the mood of this shot. Scenes like this are all too familiar where I live.
