To Whom It May Concern:Part 4
Homeless in Philadelphia's Center City, near City Hall.
I will give a more descriptive comment once the full series has been submitted. In continuing to take a look at domestic poverty, I recently spent another afternoon with Jimmy Obrien in Center City Philadelphia. Jimmy is homeless and suffering from AIDS. I came to meet him while spending some time talking to the homeless in the city. He has become a good friend and teacher over this past year to myself and several others. He hopes that his story along with the compassion of other individuals will help to transform a "stoic and failing socioeconomic system".
The proportional epic feel to this image was done by shooting from a low perspective with a wide angle lens. A fair representation of the challenges of homelessness...both for the homeless and for the society in general. It's not something that can be swept underneath a failed system of shelters or left in our peripheral vision when we walk down the streets.
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikkor 18-200 ED DX VR
Location: City Hall, Philadelphia.
Full view is best.

Josh! I haven't spoke to ya in awhile! and as i am checking what's coming in the inbox, I see this image! I want to tell you that this is a first class journalism at its best. the image needs no words. However the words empower this shot even more. I see a light years shift in the quality of your work. I am very impressed. Your words also touch on a secret, Art for most is personal. And when properly motivated great things can happen, namely this image! The best work i have seen from by far! congratulations!

My friend thank you for your wonderful words. That is the most empowering and uplifting thing that I've heard in quite a while. Your support is more appreciated than I could explain in words! Thank you!

I like everything about this shot except for the shadow that cuts straight through his eye. It just looks a little accidental.
The low angle and the wide perspective work really well here.

Thank you. It is very accidental though. I make it a point not to direct whoever the subject might be in sessions like this. It's all spontaneous, and this happened to be shot off as he was turning to talk to me. I was content with the line not cutting through his pupil or iris in the shot...but I'm not concerned with poster ad perfection. Actually the more I think about it, I would prefer a shot like this not to lack some of those accidental qualities. It makes the contrast from realism and prepped photography. If any of this were prepped or even appear that way, it would, I feel, defeat the purpose. As always I appreciate the comments.
