Description
In 1890, the idea first came about in rural West Virginia to advertise Mail Pouch tobacco on the sides of barns along commonly driven roads through the countryside. Most of these barns were painted by Harley Warrick, who painted this popular advertisement on an estimated 20,000 barns in his lifetime. Today the famous "Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns" are deemed historic landmarks by the Secretary of the Interior. Although a number have fallen over the years due to wear and neglect, many are still kept up or in recognizable condition. The last one being painted in 1992. Warrick was paid a whopping $36 a week for the artwork on these barns, a job which began for him shortly after WWII. The owners of the barns were paid between $1 and $2 a year for the advertisement, and promised an annual coat of paint that would protect the integrity of the wood. Today the Mail Pouch Barns are an interesting sight along rural countrysides in that area to anyone who may be driving through.Huntington, WV
