Description Okay, admittedly, I don't follow the MLP series. HOWEVER, one of my best friends does, and has been bugging me for a while to at least give the EQG movies a shot.

So. After finally watching both EQG movies, I figured, "Hmm...this could be a fun project to do..."

And that's how this little animation came about.

Well, I'll give you a clue: the actual song I used for this has appeared in a Marvel movie

Okay...your style is awesome, the motion is smooth, and I LOVE your overlapping action!!! This is a REALLY good animation! I love My Little Pony, but I love this animation for its amazing animation and art qualities! Did you go to school for animation, ever?

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-02 05:56:56 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it, thanks!
Well, I did work as staff at a (VERY) small arts/animation school for nine months, but I've never actually had any formal training in animation or arts. That said, working at the school did allow me to learn a lot of things via observation and practice (and just hanging out with better artists), so, there was that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BethanyAngelstar In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-02 20:36:37 +0000 UTC]

WOW! That's without any formal education in animation!? That's AWESOME!!!! You had it REALLY well done! That's the sort of stuff I try to do in my animations that I do in school. I'm in college for 2D animation, and I see a lot of awesome in this animation! Ever consider animation as a career? Even freelance?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-03 13:38:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again! In the words of Grim Natwick, "It's all in the timing and in the spacing." (...along with other assorted animation principles...)

Still could be improved, though. The most common critique I'm getting is that she's playing only one chord. And...yeah, that was a deliberate decision on my part because my focus was primarily on the body language. But...yeah, in retrospect, an additional chord wouldn't have hurt. Β Ah well.

I actually do freelance as a 2D animator/motion-graphic artist (among other things), and I also teach Flash animation part-time. It would be really cool to actually have a proper career in animation, though, so I hope you get to live that dream someday. How much longer before graduation?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BethanyAngelstar In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-03 21:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Another six months. My school tries to put almost three years of animation schooling into ONE. Last semester was HELL! I had to do a full Model Pack for an original Character Design, I had to do a full 3 - 4 minute animatic for a storyboard I had to do (do storyboard, separate panels into individual images, import them into Premiere, add in all dialogue and sound effects, even though I didn't get them from anyone until the day it was due...SHEESH...), I had to do a full character turnaround and three builds of that character in Flash (didn't get it finished at all), and I had to do an acting to dialogue piece (lipsyncing animation). AUGH. That was all in the last month of my last term! It was NUTS!

You teach Flash? Oh man, I wouldn't mind getting some more lessons in using it. What sort of flash animation do you do? Do you know how to build characters?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-04 15:37:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow....AND you're a mother of two? So...you had to do all of that while looking after two kids? Β ...that is INTENSE...Β I salute you.Β Β

Building characters in Flash.... Well, I presume you mean the parts for a cutout-style character? Yeah, I can do that. Β I do still use cutout-style animation (mostly for corporate work), but for myself, I try to do more frame-by-frame stuff (usually). Even though it takes 100 times longer to complete, well...let's beΒ honest, it just flat-out LOOKS better than the cutout method. I mean,Β THIS particular animation was done in Flash.

BethanyAngelstar In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-05 22:32:48 +0000 UTC]

Really?! Wow! Then, you would probably LOVE using a program like TV Paint or Harmony (those are what Disney and other big companies use to make their hand drawn animations now. Even allows you to use 3D in there!).

Aw. Thanks! I feel like it's not a big deal, but I guess that's just because I'm used to the crazy, busy, and intensity in my life.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-06 15:55:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just checked the prices on TV Paint....it had better let you do a whole lot of fancy things, becauseΒ it is NOT cheap...Β
Still! Good to know what the industry-standard software is. I'll keep an eye on it.

In a way, I kind of understand what you mean, as I myself have a need to be constantly doing stuff. But still, to be able to handle THAT much stuff--and NOT feel that it's a big deal(!)--is impressive. ....just try not to burn yourself out....

Good luck with the remaining six months!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BethanyAngelstar In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-06 18:21:12 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Burn myself out? I think I did that this last term! Not doing THAT again! And, thanks! This next semester, we're going to be studying digital animation (last term was all on paper animation).

TV Paint lets you do a LOT of cool things, and yes...it is NOT cheap. *sigh* And, it's not an easy program to find online, if you're the sort of person who downloads torrents of programs.

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-08 10:09:21 +0000 UTC]

Welp, I guess I'll be sticking with Flash for a while longer, then....Β One of these days I'll probably have to move on to something else if it becomes absolutely necessary, but until then, Flash it is.

By the way, have you any interest in trying out any 3D-related stuff? (I wanted to once, but at that specific time the possibility of doing so fell through, which made me decide to focus solely on 2D animation. At this point, however, I'm thinking that probably knowing how to work some 3D software might not be such a bad idea...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BethanyAngelstar In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-08 20:47:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, I do have a bit of interest, but I would DEFINITELY need to be trained on it. Otherwise, I just can't process how it WORKS. I've tried on my own, and the best I've been able to do is mutilate an orb. Hahaha!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to BethanyAngelstar [2015-04-10 14:20:44 +0000 UTC]

Sweet animation! Motions are smooth and the details are great.
At what FPS rate are you working at? 24?
Love the addition of the decepticon logo
(All hail Megatron!)
Edit: Oh and what program do you use? (probably get bugged about that a lot. apologies).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to RoyBarnman [2015-04-02 06:09:26 +0000 UTC]

25fps, actually. In retrospect, it may as well have been 24fps, but I used to work a lot with standard-definition PAL video which has a progressive framerate of 25fps, so I just use 25fps as default. The next animation will be in 24fps.
I used Flash for animation, AfterEffects for compiling/color correction, and Photoshop for exporting the GIF file.
Oh, and thanks for the watch!

It's d*mn impressive. Are you a professional animator?
Oh, and thanks for answering my technical questions!
Have a lovely day.

JoshNg In reply to RoyBarnman [2015-04-03 08:54:46 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!
I'm actually a self-taught animator. I never got to study at an animation/arts school, although I did work as staff at one for a bit.
I currently freelance as a 2D animator/motion-graphic artist, and I also teach Flash animation part-time, so...at the very least, I try to LOOK professional, I guess.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoyBarnman In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-03 20:32:30 +0000 UTC]

Well if you get paid for animating then you are a professional!
How long did you study on your own? And was it hard getting into the business?
I ask cuz I myself am aiming for animation.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoshNg In reply to RoyBarnman [2015-04-04 15:11:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, as of now, it's been 16 years since I first picked up Flash. So...yeah.
As for getting into the business, I honestly can't say how easy or hard it is, because I never actually worked at a proper animation house; I worked at a video-production house. All I can say is to build up your portfolio, network with other people,Β and when you get hired, be prepared to work REALLY hard.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoyBarnman In reply to JoshNg [2015-04-04 22:14:48 +0000 UTC]

You reminded me of a pattern I see a lot in animators' advice: That the work is hard.
Now, when you mean hard, do you mean time consuming or taxing? Time consuming work is something I already do a lot of. Taxing work? A bit less experienced. Not saying I'm phased, I've just....accepted the inevitable.
Thanks for the heads up!
One last question and I'll (try) to stop asking questions.
What did you do during those 16 years you were studying Flash for financial support? I can't live with ma and pop's forever.
I remember interviews with other animators who worked at CN and they both were working un-related occupations at the lower end of the socio-economic ladder. Β IF the same is true for you, then that's trend number 3 I see. I ask because I just wanted to know if you waited long before making it into any art-related profession.

Thanks for sticking with me. Have a good day!
(FYI: the second trend is animators have hit their heads hard at some point or another.)
