A old photo of Freya before she enlisted with her pet Slate, a retired Dire Wolf that Freya father brought home after he retired from the military, the photo was taken by Freya’s father Keon when he was teaching her how to use a gun and how to live off the land.

Among the Novus and many groups within the galaxy, animal companions are fairly common, for the Novus however they rarely bring “normal” beasts with them when they took to the stars, it’s common for both legionnaires and civilians to take with them a local creature known as a Dire Wolf, one of several breeds of Apex predators that the Novus were somewhat able to domesticate. Dire wolves being the most common species for people to own as pets, do to their friendly and loyal personality, many dire wolves are found on frontier worlds and early colony worlds, used by the locals as a cheap and reliable way to ward off threats.

The legions of Novus will also use and train as guard beasts, to aid their squads in scouting or with some of larger breeds, attacks dogs. Do to the dire wolf size and physical characteristics they are fairly deadly, showing off small fires with relative ease and having enough strength to pin down or disable lightly armor vehicles and units in exosuits. Even going as far to sometime cybernetic enhance them when one would suffer great injuries in the line of duty, sometime as Crytech or Architech will take it one step further, grafting synthetic muscles, mono claws or other enhancements to turn their loyal friend into a try monsters.

However with all the benefits they off, the Novus are fairly quick to enact population control on them do to their aggressive adoptive nature, a small population left alone on any world will quickly adapt to the world within in a single generation, from death world versions who sport bone like armor plating, venomous bites and are twice as large as a normal one, to megaplex versions that are smaller but will survive off anything and are often more aggressive than normal. The Novus goes out their way to ensure dire wolves and similar species populations are kept in check, but do to failed colonies, smugglers or just family refusing to follow the rules, feral dire beasts can be found across the galaxy, becoming a invasive species on many worlds.
