After the Surge shattered the Psi gates across the galaxy, worlds had to rely on a new means of faster then light travel. Thanks to Andrew Breach, a former Terrain Federation researcher planned for new form of travel without the gates before they fell, as he felt relaying on alien technology would be the downfall of humanity. He seeded the frontier with his Breach engine to allow for individual ships to travel on their own power, though slower then the gates it allowed for frontier systems to scout out further without the gates though the use of them never caught on.

But thanks to him, humanity and many other species thanks him for his work as without him countless more worlds would have fallen during the surge. Now in the modern time all FTL capable ship has some form of a Breach engine, from old lost world struggling to maintain the few they have, to new super powers building and designing newer models and ways to travel the reef.

When a modern ship wish to “dive” the breach engine rips a hole in real space, forming a shield like bubble around the ship as it travel the reef. Another reality the exist overlayed on top of our known reality, just like our own reality the reef house countless creatures and being. Some small and harmless, others who mere presents will shatter the mind of weaker men. The reef isn’t a safe or welcoming place, but it is the only reality way of travel, but many researchers and psi tech engineers are always exploring new ways to create a better and safer means to travel great distances.
