Inspired by the song "Apprentice of the Rocket Man", by Angus & Julia Stone. A self portrait. 30cmx40cm.Watercolors, on watercolor canvas! It's the coolest stuff, I highly advise you try it sometime.

There are so many reasons to love this. I haven't heard the song you're referencing, but this piece speaks volumes to me. There's this wonderful dynamic of brightness and cheer versus somberness and seriousness. The strength and saturation of your primary colors really pops, but there's a kind of delicateness to it because it's watercolor and most of it is very thinned-down. The way you made the clouds is great, too. It's like they're literally just holes in the sky. And I can't get over how beautifully rendered the head is. It's so emotional. The muted, bluish, dark gray was the absolute perfect choice. And that tiny, subtle bit of pink for the lips is gorgeous. The way your shadows kinda make the skin look like it's sagging a little, the thinness of the hair, and the crispness of the lines all make it look like "I've just been told something terrible but I don't know how to deal with it and I can't wrap my head around it, and this is stressful."
The composition is very strong, too. You've got this great approximate symmetry thing going on. I also like how you note the shoulders with just those two lines. It's really all you need, I think, because otherwise it would be too much information, and it would take away from all this other loveliness.
I absolutely adore this painting. You've made a phenomenal work here. Thank you for sharing this beauty with the world.
(Side note: This was probably the easiest critique I've ever done. I could go on for days.)
