because its a 3D software... which main advantages are, once i finish creating the character in Maya, i can rotate, move or scale the character any way i want, and pose them any way i want again and again without the pain of drawing the character again from scratch...

This actually seems legit! And I guess it makes all the time spent in it worth it? Is it hard to understand how it works? I'm suspecting it needs patience, and I'm not good at that; although I'd really like to try doing 3D stuff, since I'm already drawing and writing. Who knows, maybe I'll really like it?

well, in order for you to create character in Maya, you dont have to understand all the tools... i would say, the basic tools are enough to create character... and the term to creating characters or any object in 3D software is different.. we dont call it "drawing", we called it "modelling"...
and yes it requires patience, because there's is a lot of repetition in the process...
in term of is it hard to understand, i would say, digital 3D space are not different than real life 3D space... they have the same concept... its not hard to understand the basic principle of 3D, because its intuitive despite the softwares...
if you interested to doing 3D, i would say, dont create anything complex yet... familiarize yourself with the tool, and for a beginner, you can try to create some simple object... like a glass, bowl, bottle, chair, table, or anything that simple... after that you can start to create something more complex like buildings, house, etc... then you can try creating characters...
