Description Another picture of my character Erias (PLEASE if you haven't seen the other picture go and look because Erias is marvellous).

Erias has been through a lot and his body bears the marks of his experience. He is a fighter slave who was owned by a particular sadistic master to whom he lost his eyes, his dignity and his lover. Clearly the scars are both physical and emotional so I felt that I'd draw something with the right mood to illustrate it.

This picture was an utter pleasure to draw because I have managed to portray not only convincing scars but a muscular male body (I don't do that often... actually this might be my first one).

!!!DEEPER COMMENTARY WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED!!!!

edit: I shrunk his head - it really was too big for his body.

this is wonderfully done. Do you have any recommendations for how to depict scars?

It tends to be in the colouring and shading - none of these wereΒ drawn on in the sketch but rather something I added later in photoshop. It's hardΒ to explain without pictures so I'dΒ suggest looking for some tutorials. Here's a nice simple one:Β flatlandq.deviantart.com/art/S…

I'm worried about those empty eye sockets...wouldn't something get stuck in there?

Also, does he use a staff or something to get around?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JRock-Prophet In reply to RocMegamanX [2008-07-30 12:49:33 +0000 UTC]

Nothing would get stuck in there because he wears fake eyes that are just black - just something to fill the space really. And no, he doesn't use a staff to get around - he just mostly keeps a hand on a wall or something.

Heehee. He has a shirt. He just happens to not be wearing it. He'll put it on all in good time. But his chest is fun to draw... all those scars are good artistic exercise.

I bet! It takes quite a bit of artistic pinache to pull those off realistically. :3 He looks really nice without the shirt. x3 hehe

Heehee. Yes, I also think so. Don't you just want to comfort him?
I don't think he'll ever really get over his lost love, though. Shame.

He's so open with his pain. Arms open, legs wide... the tilt of his chin shows some sort of shame, but I don't think it's real. He's proud of who he is, or happy about something at the very least. The soft smile on his lips says that. I love your delvings into this character. You're amazing with scar tissue (something often very hard to render) and his hair is utterly gorgeous. More?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JRock-Prophet In reply to holidame [2005-07-19 16:41:29 +0000 UTC]

The chin shows shame? *looks at it* Wow... yes. I guess it does. But that is in character too. He is used to people not wanting to see him, he is used to people feeling awkward around him and his experience as a slave has thought him immense submissiveness and obedience. I guess his face being turned away is a sign of his public self depreciation, how he has learned to make himself smaller, less intimidating and bold so that people would not be afraid of him.

Although he caters to everyone else, he is also very open and honest all the time. He is no longer ashamed of who he is and what he has been through. He has accepted who he is and what he is and he wears it openly. There is still a lot of pride in him that has not been crushed and he does not shy away from pain. He is a fighter in spirit as well as in occupation.

Yee! The scars are probably my best achievement here. I'm not sure I'll be able to draw his chest so well ever again because I'd feel compelled to live up to my own achievements. Nonetheless, I can't help but feel that this picture is unique. It's very special to me. I know people criticise me for my "safe" approach to emotions but although this is still on the gentle side, it's the subtelty that makes it all the more powerful for me.

What? What? Why are you an idiot? No you aren't!

I love what you say! You just put the right things into words! You see more than I do in my own picture... but that's because I know what it is and I don't have the words to describe it and all of that goes into the picture itself. I guess I draw the picture to help myself find words. Or so that people like you can help me find the words.

It's called being a good artist if you can competantly show your thoughts and feelings in the design and techniques of your art. I find a lot of people are amazed when I deconstruct the body language and design aspects of the picture into words... I get a lot of "Ohmigawd, you're right! I didn't think of that!" Hehh!

Also, I'm an idiot because I forgot to favorite it.

I do think of it... I have the same skills of observation but I'm more cautious about doing it to my own pictures. I'd rather other people do it to my pictures. I have a very raw, emotional reaction to my pictures which I don't mind talking about - actually I love talking about it... but I don't like to analyse it directly myself or it loses some power for me - I almost get bored of it when I feel I have seen everything there is to see. The alluring element is what is concealed, not what is shown. Because it keeps you looking and wondering why it is powerful.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

holidame In reply to JRock-Prophet [2005-07-19 17:11:55 +0000 UTC]

You use technique and design whether you know it or not for every picture. you want it to be more feminine, beautiful or natural? You use curves. You want it to be more masculine, hard hitting and bold, you use angles and heavy lines interspersed sparsly with thin ones.

Personally, I don't think there is any end to analyzing your own work, especially if you do it with someone else. Everyone sees something differently. Sometimes, day by day. What happened to you that day/week/year/life effects your perception, so you always get a different reaction. Even when going over your own pieces, if you allow yourself that. ^^V

JRock-Prophet In reply to holidame [2005-07-19 17:21:27 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. Maybe that's why my pictures are doomed to look feminine - my style intrinsicly contains very delicate lines and plenty of curves.

Yes. Other people are important. You think you may see everything but there is no end to discovery. There are so many ways of seeing things. Time does make a difference too. I look back at my old pictures sometimes and it's a really fulfilling experience for me.

Yeah, the scars and muscle tones are right on! hmm deeper commentary? well I guess it could be my chance to point out your struggle with emotion. this pic for xample, to me, seems like there is much emotion bubbling just below the surface, but you dont seem to allow it to show. everything seems to be kinda cautiously in the middle.

for example, his pose seems to be between either being totally exhausted and broken, or being upright and strong--defiant even. but it just seems to linger in the middle of both. i think its very interesting you decided to make the background gray too, cuz that's carefully in the middle too. if the background were black, i would view him and his situation as being more of a struggle. if the background were completely white, i would view it more as a triumphant and hopeful image.

but maybe thats what you want to say? that he is both broken and beaten but still strong? I say that a lot in my own pics, but usually by just showing a lot of blood and cuts and giving the character a defiant, apathetic look. i take the eazy way out hehe. but i dont know, i think you should find some way to give the contradicting ideas of strength and weakness both more power. i think that at least in this pic, they cancel each other out and leave me not knowing what to think or feel exactly.

Woo! Congrats on the best comment so far, Medge!

I totally agree with what you said! I didn't notice that about the grey but it does work that way. I guess the way I ended up drawing this picture is a sign of how I feel about Erias. He's a very self-contained character, often he is not allowed to talk by his masters and he doesn't often share his feelings or experiences with anybody so that give him both a tragic and powerful air. I think that within him there is a lot of conflict that he doesn't necessarily even acknowledge to himself. His mind has been so numbed to pain that he doesn't always recognise when he is experiencing it.

I wanted his strong... but I wanted him vulnerable too. That's why he hasn't got his fake eyes in (well... just black balls, really) or his sunglasses on. Erias hates having his sunglasses off because he feels vulnerable. I actually do think this is an accurate picture of his soul - strong, determined, resiliant but wavering, broken, damaged, cut deeply and trying oh-so-hard to ignore it.
