The "Watcher in the Water" was a horrible and mysterious beast that extended its tentacles to devour a possible victim, its origin according to ancient stories came flowing down the Sirannon river until it was captured by a large lake built by the dwarves; Hidden in a great black puddle "the Guardian" he became the sinister defender of the West gate of the ancient fallen kingdom of "Khazad-dum".
“A long, sinuous tentacle had crawled out of the water; it was pale green, phosphorescent, and wet. (...) Another twenty tentacles appeared, spreading out like waves. The dark water boiled and the stench was appalling.” 🐙
In the film adaptation the Guardian of the water was designed as a kraken with a humanoid face that tries to devour the hobbit "Frodo" for perceiving a great evil. (He wore the one ring)
Another curious fact is the possible connection and influence of “H. P. Lovecraft” in the stories of Professor J.R.R.Tolkien, although they are only rumors and comparisons among fans, the description that Gandalf makes about the hidden horrors in Middle-earth will leave you thinking:
“We fight far below the living earth, where there is no reckoning of time. He held me tight and I stabbed him, until finally he fled through some dark tunnels. They were not built by the people of Dúrin, Gimli son of Glóin. Below, below the deepest dwellings of the dwarves, nameless creatures gnaw at the world. Not even Sauron knows them. They are older than him. I walked those paths, but nothing I will say that darkens the light of day.” 🐙
Finally, despite the parallels, Lovercraft was an atheist and Tolkien a devout believer, both authors drank from the same source of lost and remote times to describe imaginary worlds and will be the most influential writings of fantastic narrative and cosmic horror. ⚔🐙
