I can be the same way sometimes. When season 9 started, I wanted South to be completely different than what we see later on; that her past self would made her future self more tragic. But it turns out she's been a bitch since the getgo so there goes that idea. Damn.
But yes. Nothing SHOULD be as simple as it could. That's just boring.

Ah, but perhaps not! For Season 9 has shown us South's key center: North. South seems to be the same, correct, but now we see North and that itself opens many new doors. We see that her attitude was always balanced by her brother's cool and kind outer energy. With him, she actually showed a level of concern and team acknowledgement. Perhaps it was the loss of that piece that made her care for no one but herself, to cut ties from anyone else that would "leave her" alone.

Hmmm...perhaps. She was genuinely upset when he got shot trying to protect her. His death was probably an epiphany for her, one way or another. But you don't think any part of North's behavior lead her to to become the 'care for no one but herself' character that she inevitably becomes?
If North was so preoccupied with having an AI and testing with the other enhanced Freelancers, he may not have had time for his kid sister like he did before. They wouldn't be assigned as many missions together because she would fall down the ranks while he would rise up. He may have still care for her, but he wouldn't have a chance to show it. South, being a naturally hotblooded type, sees this as him abandoning her, water becoming thicker than blood, and her true jealousy towards those with AI comes to light. They took her brother away from her. It took her brother away from her. When the siblings 'reunite' together after the fall of Freelancer, she may not have forgiven him for his -in her mind- betrayal, and abandons him in turn when Maine comes after them as the Meta.

Ah, but perhaps this instead. She wasn't mad at North at all. She was jealous, not of him; but of Theta. Theta stole her brother. She didn't want an AI because North had one, it was because Theta had a Freelancer and she couldn't compete with that. If she did have one, she and North wouldn't need to be separated. But the test was to see what would happen if you give a pair one AI perhaps. Result: jealousy; just not in the expected way...
Or... perhaps I'm mad and I speak words of insanity.

That's an interesting proposition. I like it. They knew jealousy would be a result of the test, that would be obvious. But with whom her jealousy would lie with had yet to be determined. Mm. Yes. Interesting...
