My first wild toucan! This beautiful little guy perched in the open until he was run off by a much larger Black Vulture...darn vulture! Toucans and woodpeckers share the same order, Piciformes, and are many of my favorite birds. This was taken with a 500mm lens, 2x TC, and Canon 7D (effective 1600mm).Related content

I didn't think that it was here in Florida. There are some very different things in the Everglades but I never saw one when I lived down there so I had to ask.

Well done ! I've seen toucans in Costa Rica, but not this kind. This one as such a little body in comparison with his beak, this is so cute

I'm glad that I could teach a few people with that tidbit...it surprised even me (and I've taken an Ornithology class). Both Woodpeckers and Toucans excavate their own nests from trees!
