Description TOTAL HOURS: approx. 8 hours
TOOLS: Oil paints, brushes, paper towel, Photoshop (color adjustments for the photograph)
CANVAS SIZE: 10" X 12"

Finished on April 19, 2009. A photo reference was used for the pose. It was close to completion a month ago but I wasn't able to work on it with due to the busy schedule.

My first oil painting. I didn't get a chance to learn the techniques in the past so I just experimented. The paint was given to me from a friend but most of them were almost dried out. In the end, instead of using the brush, I rolled up paper towels into a "smudge" tool, shaped like a cigarette and transferred the dry paints onto the canvas. In a way, it was almost like using oil pastels.

I want to give a huge thank you to artists and for our conversations about oil painting. Seeing and talking about their work inspired me to try it myself. Please check out their galleries for all kinds of wonderful digital and traditional works!

This is beautiful. The piece isn't busy and I like that. The details in her kimono, her hair piece, and her hair is outstanding. Very inventive about the paper towel. Nicely done. ^_^

Thanks Musela! Paper towel was fun to use and cheap. I'm thinking of using it again for my next one, if I ever get around to it

You're welcome!

Yah, it's amazing what you can come up with in a pinch. Oh, and I know what you mean by "if I ever get around to it". I can't seem to "get around to it" with my drawings lately. =_=

Yeah, I've just been so busy lately with work that I hardly have time to do my own stuff.

i saw this when you posted it a couple days ago, i just wanted to look a for a while before i commented. i have been looking forward to seeing it since you mentioned you were doing an oil painting. i can't believe you went thru all that trouble with the paint. a part of you must of enjoyed doing it that way. when i first enlarged it and saw the texture, before i read the text i was like this is oils!?... lol then i understood and it does look a little like pastels...i like the way the kimono the hair and the neck pick up the color from the parasol... the neck yes the neck :nod; most sensual, reminds me of Kuroda Seikis work. the pattern in the kimono, excellent, love the water, haha ... you know i ramble on like this for who knows how long, i thought if i waited i could get my thoughts organized and make a coherent comment.. didn't seem to work though . that is a small canvas. i know i work small myself, i excuse is i love details so much i would never finish a larger piece,... anyway you know i love your work and its always such a thrill to see something new from you. thank you.

I think I did enjoy experimenting and finding ways to make use of the almost dried oils. I've done oil pastels in the past and thought what I was doing with the paint was a lot similar, except I was smudging it on canvas. I did use a small brush for the details at the end though. I like Kuroda Seiki's work! The pattern took me a number of tries, sometimes I had to wipe it off and restart because it didn't look right. Haha, your comments are always fun to read . I used to love working on large format but I think I've gotten used to sketching in my small sketchbook that it feels weird to work big. Thank you and thanks for the !

I'll go along with Kip regarding the natural artist statement. You really do shine when you try something different. That's a sign of confidence in your vision. Thank you also for the very kind words in your comments section.

FYI, I bought a really cheap set of brushes (all the sizes and shapes you'd need) for about $6.50 at Slobby Hobby if you have one near you. I don't use the hairy sticks often enough to bother spending big money on them - it's just good to know there are cheaper alternatives (of course, you can't beat the price of a rolled up piece of paper). Great work again, JoD!

Thank you, Decarabia ! And no problem, I do really appreciate you and Kzeor talking to me about oil painting.

I did buy a cheap set of brushes for oil painting when I went out to get mineral spirits last time. The problem I had wasn't the brushes, but the paints. They were nearly dried up and I didn't know about it until I was squeezing the paints out of the tubes. I couldn't get the colors to properly mix with the brushes so I used the rolled up paper towel. Luckily I liked the effect it gave and I might use it again!

It's ALWAYS good to experiment - especially if it yields impressive results like yours.

Really beautiful job. My eyes keep being drawn back to her neck, the left side. I love how you shaded it with a hint of the warmth from the umbrella, which I also see in her hair. You are a natural artist that can pick up any medium, no matter what condition they are in, and create beautiful work.

Get you a new set and some good brushes. I use a bigger canvas and I'd like to see you work larger too...I think we would see some really nicely, detailed work.

Lovely, lovely stuff!

Thank you, it means a lot coming from you! I did get myself a set of brushes just for oil painting. The problem I had was that most of the paints were almost dried up (and I didn't realize it until I started painting.) I had a tough time squeezing the paint out and getting it onto the brush. So I ended up using rolled up paper towel. And I'll definitely get a bigger canvas next time! I do want to put a big one in my living room if it all goes well.
