Description "By a tree in the woods there read a hobbit."

What? Am I dreaming? Is this true? DID I ACTUALLY SUBMIT ACTUAL ARTWORK TO DEVIANTART?!?!?! Well, I am more than happy to say yes.

So, it's been more than a year since my last submission. September of 2011 to be exact. THAT IS A LOT OF TIME. Many things have happened in that year. I joined Tumblr and became woman with an uncontrollable addiction for fictional characters and celebrities elder than 30. I also finished my first year of high school, and even when I should be currently in my final year (maybe some of you remember that I actually had to repeat a school year) I feel very satisfied with myself. I also turned 18 less than a month ago. I made many new friends, lost others, and being honest, my life is a complete mess. But a good mess, so don't worry.

Anyway, enough life events, the point is I'm BACK after an
extremely long hiatus, which ended (I hope) for various of reasons:
1.- I got a new computer to work in (not exclusively mine, but of the family)
2.- My birthday and christmas finally happened, so I got myself a brand new tablet.
3.- The Hobbit was released.
Now, you may be asking yourselves "Why is the third one important? It's not as if it is a life-changing event". Well, for me it was.
I first watched Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring when I was just 7 years old, about the same time I read my first "real" book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I remember not being able to go to the theater to see The Two Towers when it was released, and waiting for the DVD to come out to finally watch it. I remember how scared I was of Gollum. I remember December 2003, when The Return of the King, the final chapter of the trilogy finally arrived to the big screen. That was the first time I was actually excited for a movie to come out. I remember everything about that day. After that, I watched all the Lord of the Rings films countless of times.
In 2006, I found out that the makers of this wonderful movies were planning on making "The Hobbit". I had no idea what it was at first, but after someone explained it to me, I was indeed very excited. But I still could not get the grasp of it. I followed the news of the project in the next years, with no real news to find out about, and my eagerness faded away quickly. And then... four years ago, when I had nothing else to do, I decided to go for a copy of the book and start reading the Hobbit. It took me no more than 3 days to finish it, and I knew I was in love. The book made me remember the world Tolkien had created, and I watched the movies again as soon as I could. After that, I bought the extended edition with all that extra material about how the movie was made. I was already a movie-lover by then, but after looking at all the work of Peter Jackson and his team, all that work and all that passion put together to create such an amazing thing, made me decide what I wanted to do for a living. I decided back then that I wanted to be a film-maker.
Also, after reading The Hobbit, my interest for the movie adaptation woke from it's slumber, and again I began to search for all the information I could about the developments of the movie. When the trailer was released - I kid you not - actual tears fell from my eyes as soon as the first words were spoken. You can imagine my state by the time the dwarves were singing "Misty Mountains".
In the early months of 2012 the Production Videos began to come out on the internet, and suddenly it was happening, it wasn't a ghost-production anymore. Every time they came out, I watched carefully, trying to figure out what part of the book they were filming, or how much I liked the design of this or that character.
A year passed by, and as all of you know, the so expected movie came out the 14 of December, just a few days before my birthday. Of course, I went straight away to watch it from day one, and I realized how much I had missed when I was a little kid and couldn't go to the releases of The Lord of the Rings.
The lights faded, the music started, and The Hobbit began. Suddenly, I was 7 years old again.

I don't think there is a way to describe my feelings for the books of Tolkien and its adaptations. They were part of my childhood, and eventually made me who am I now. I became a better person because of these movies, and they have inspired me more than anyone has ever done. This film made me realize what I wanted to become for the rest of my life, even when the chances of making a movie of that scale are about one in a million.
Middle-Earth is a world that lives extremely close to my heart, and I ofter wish I could close my eyes and be resting on my hobbit hole, just before a wandering wizard arrived and took me on an adventure.
And thus how this drawing was made. After watching the Hobbit, I decided to do something more than just sketches. If I wanted to improve, than I had to stop sitting on my ass.
Trust me when I say that I have never worked so hard on a drawing before. It may not be great, or nearly as good at most of the art out there, but it definitely is me doing the best I can. For god's sake, it is the first time I do and actual background for a change.
So this character is me, and how I imagine myself in that fictional world. It means a lot to me, and it has finally dragged me out of that horrible's artist block that lasted more than a year. I am finally daring to experiment a little, try new things. What a better start than a hobbit huh?

God, that got longer than I expected. Much longer. I've been writing for twenty minutes now, but I guess I needed to get that out of my chest. If you just read all that, and are still here, then I thank you. Seriously, I love you for listening for what I have to say, few people actually do that for me in real life.

I remember when the first trilogy came out, I was too young to understand it.

Now, After watching the hobbit, I revisited the original trilogy, Never regretted it.

Personally, I wanted to see more of the dwarves, Their abilities as craftsmen and workers reflect my interests in metalworking to make knives and swords, And being a Harley-Davidson Mechanic.

Jules!

oh, goodness, you too? i cried when the movie started, i heard howard shores sweet melodies again... and i was sitting next to my brother, he got annoyed because i kept saying, "ben. were seeing it! were watching the hobbit! were seeing it!" i had to hold my heart inside my chest or i would have died... and i tried to hide the tears or utter nostalgia (is there such a thing?) when the shire came into view... i just didnt think i would ever see it again!
oh, awesome drawing btw!

You just described my experience of watching the hobbit for the first time. I just could not believe it! It was real! There was something from Tolkien's world that I had never seen! The music made me especially emotional. That soundtrack my god! It waked up things that I didn't knew were still there!
I have very conflictive feeling about watching the other two films to feel that again, but at the same time, I don't want it to be over!

I really do! Glen Kane is one of my favorite artists in the planet, and has been one of my biggest inspirations from the start, and I have tried to get rid of the anime style for a while now. It's not that I don't like, but I hated that everyone said "oh, you draw anime" like it was just one big unimportant thing.
Anyway, I am so glad my art reminds you of Disney!

Aww So cute! I love that expression! <3
Holy wow! THAT is a description right there! It's amazing what Tolkien and the adaptations brings out in a person isn't it! Tolkien's writing style is brilliant, but it's really hard for me to read it for enjoyment.

Thank you! And I completely agree with you about Tolkien's writing style: he is brilliant, but it is very hard for me to fully understand it, specially since english is not my first language. I was only able to read the Hobbit because it's a children's book! And I have this almost obsessive thought of reading a novel in its original language (well, only if it's english, because I don't know a word about french, german, etc.), and this applies especially for Tolkien. I've tried to read The Lord of the Rings several times now, and every time I understand more about it, but I decided that I won't read the complete trilogy until my english is good enough, and so, I study hard in class and read almost every book in english, or watch movies in english without the subtitles. That has helped a lot, not only with the language, but in actually understanding accents.
As you can see, Tolkien has inspired me to do mostly everything I do. I don't know if that is good or bad.

*runs to your dA page to find out where you are from* Oh wow! You are from Mexico! I would have had no idea! Your English is very good, better then many that I know. I wish I could say I know Spanish, but I only know a few words that I picked up from my co-workers. I know German, well enough for small conversations, but that's about it.
The hardest part for me with Tolkien's work is all the detail he puts into it. It's wonderful because it paints a picture in your mind, but I don't really care for sentences upon sentences of details.

It isn't good or bad, it is what it is, and you should never be ashamed to admit what inspires you

If that's your first background then it is seriously amazing! And you look very cute as a Hobbit.

And such an emotional artist comment too. I think it's amazing that the LOTR and Hobbit movies have made you realize what you want to be in life. And I can totally find myself in your description of the love you have for Tolkien's works. And how you felt like a child again when you saw the Hobbit; I kinda felt the same way. It's inspiring to read that Peter Jackson and his crew have made you realize that you had to get off your lazy butt to start improving; I still need to find that realization, but the prospects of 'The Hobbit' might just trigger the same reaction in myself some day.

juliahiddles In reply to Maeneth13 [2013-01-10 18:05:45 +0000 UTC]

That background was HARD. I never tend to make enough "research" for my drawings, but this time I spend a whole day looking at other's artists work, the shape of tree I liked, how to make the leaves and make them look like leaves, the same goes for the wood. Anyway, I first began the drawing saying to myself "This better have a worthy background for Tolkien!"

I really hope that you can find that realization as well. I was very lucky being honest, before that I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do, and only knew I good this at this or that. And even that the pressure of not knowing what I want to do for a living has disappeared, now I have to find a place to study it! It's hard to study film in the country I live in (Mexico). There are only two colleges that have that career, and one of them accepts very few students, so even when I will apply to it, it's practically impossible to get accepted unless you have the resources. The second one is my best option so far, and it's not so far from home, not to mention that if you get good grades you can go for a full semester to the NYU. Still, it's hard to get in as well.

You certainly put some work in to it, and it shows! And indeed, Tolkien needs a worthy background. You made that happen.

Well, it seems like you have a full plan figured out! It does sound hard to find a good place to study film in Mexico, but I seem to think your second option will be the best for you. I hope you'll get accepted.
And maybe I will find that realization one day, but it's not today. Though, never lose hope right?
