3rd ENVOY'S JOURNAL - LOG 174

As the downpour finally let up, for a length of time which I could no longer recall, I could only observe in silence at the now alien vista that lay before me as I stepped outside. It took a while to realize that the ruined city before me was once bustling with activity and life. Now, there is nothing but eerie silence. I don't even know if anyone else is alive here at this point.

From what little bits of information I have gathered, sea levels have risen dramatically since the downpour. Places, entire cities, especially those close to sea level are now submerged in blood red waters. Entire island nations in the Pacific, completely wiped off the map as they are now nowhere to be seen. Aerial surveys conducted all over the globe report entire oceans that are now completely transformed into a bright red hue. It's even possible that the entire Earth's oceans are now completely changed.

Most disturbing of all is the sudden mass die-offs of ocean life. Everywhere, reports of dead sea life washed up on shores, and floating on sea surfaces en masse sparked concerns that the waters have poisoned a large percentage of all sea life. Initial tests hypothesized Red Tide to be the cause, but later proved to be false, as the offending microorganism was absent. In fact, the water samples showed a complete absence of life even under the microscope. Other laboratories around the world have confirmed the same results.

On land, soil drenched in these waters have become completely infertile. Crops everywhere that were exposed to the rain have begun wilting as well. It is not known if the rain had anything to do with it, or due to the significantly reduced solar output. Perhaps it's both.

Survivors of the deluge everywhere are advised not to drink from contaminated sources, sparking a global crisis of water supply shortage. An essential part of life once taken for granted on this planet, have now become more precious that gold itself. People would kill in order to have access to clean water supplies. For those whom are lucky enough to be in places where public water sources are left untouched by the affliction, water rationing has been imposed in order to maintain a precarious equilibrium in the reservoirs and treatment plants.

As expected, these places will become magnets for refugees. Hence local governments have imposed martial law and will employ lethal force on anyone who attempt to disrupt order. As if the anarchy previously seen before this wasn't enough, I have no doubts in my mind that a Malthusian catastrophe looms just beyond the horizon within these coming months as food and water shortages become exacerbated.

Worse, even in times like these, there are opportunists trying to make a profit out of the situation by gating access to these essentials behind extortionary business practices. As if material wealth still mattered even as the end looms at our doorstep. I have seen too much lately that reminds me of what a pathetic lot we are as a species...
