Description *Sorry for bad english*

Rignif is the result of my final course work entitled VILUMICE [Conceptual Videographic Experiment Inspired in Silent Films and the Contributions of the Visual Language]. This is for academic intent and doesn't have any commercial profit.

The aim of the work is to change spoken texts on pictograms, making story understandable only through the image composition. This is just the first step in a long way research.

Still has a lot of work to do to make it finished. I do plan to spend my time hereafter improving this method.

1 month of preparation
2 days of shooting
R$ 120 of total costs
67 minutes of video rushes
15gb files on computer
6 weeks of editing

I liked the way you communicated to the audience in a way that didn't require language, thus anyone watching would understand the story.

The music choice was fantastic.

Well, Rignif is a video work with silent movie inspiration. But it is a video, and the visual language of video was used together with the visual language of cinema. The cuts applied to a long scene [10 seconds of walking, cutted to 3-4 seconds] are part of the video language and I decided to use this because of the long scene. I wanted to reduce the time of the scene but yet showing the long distance of the walk. So, I make the cuts syncronizing with the music.
I guess it is a nice effect. Thanks for pointing it!

You may not do something big and new. Whatever you do you may do it in better way, don't matter its smallness. The universe is not made only for big stars.

good effort.
I enjoyed it, and I understood the story.
You hit on a great idea to use pictograms also.

But I feel some changes would improve it no-end.
I think what makes the story harder to understand is that fact that they are just standing around when the pictograms pop up. I thinking the pictograms should probably come up when there is more of a visual aid on the screen.
Eg, a person falling would be accompanied by a skull, to depict fear of death.

Also, if you are telling a story without words then the pictures have to make up for it. And there is no way here you can use colour to highlight anything, because the whole thing is black & white.

Great choice of music, the editing style reminds me of 'Snatch'. Your style to me suggests you are not normally a film maker- but a graphic designer? Am I correct?

oh and congrats on the DD

julium In reply to 99media [2009-02-03 02:53:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your critique! This is just what I need to improve this idea.

During my studies about this experiment, I realize that the pictograms would be used as complement for the visual aid on the screen. If I need to depict fear when a person is falling I do that showing the person's expression in its face; I don't need pictograms in this case. BTW, in the end of the academic experiment, I realize that the pictograms are almost unnecessary such as the subtitles in early silent films. Certainly I'll pay attention about your hint in future projects.

Again, during my studies, I read that B&W images can be more impactant than coloured images. I agree with that. And I like make challenges intricate: make something good only with B&W tones is harder than the colourful nature. Of course, if in some next project I need to put some colour, I'll do that.

Yes, I graduated on graphic design curse and during the last year in college I terribly fallen in love with cinema. This is my passion, my life's dream for now...

Thank you very much for hints, eulogies and all the support, mate!

Great storytelling! I love the silent film style with the pictures. Shows that film is truly a universal language. And I really liked the editing. The jump cuts work so well with the music. Beleza!

Thank you for your reply. My english is poor too so...

I meant with those "in take cuts" that after this point on, in my opinion, there was no good reason to do them anymore. I mean that she had already put the camera away and placed the bomb.

I dont want to sound like I'm whining I just want you to understand what I meant so that it could be helpful for you.

When I get useful critique from my teachers and other students I think how it could help my work and future films and such.

I'm not saying my way is better. It's just a different view.

julium In reply to jampura [2009-01-03 12:09:54 +0000 UTC]

Oww, I think I get the point! Are you saying that wasn't needed to show the pictures taken? I think this because the scene showing the dude taking the victim into the jungle is the same of the pictures, the only difference is the media: video and photo. Is this that you meant?

Yes, I love to get useful critique, I think only with the point of video from the others we can make something really good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jampura In reply to julium [2009-01-03 19:05:23 +0000 UTC]

"Are you saying that wasn't needed to show the pictures taken?" I dont mean that, but after that 'icture taking' scene the fast cuts inside a take are not necessary. I'm talking about the last 40 seconds of the film before the credits.

Most of the time I wouldn't mind about that sort of thing in a feature length film and such but since this is an experiment and a short film I feel I need to say this :]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

julium In reply to jampura [2009-01-05 00:41:19 +0000 UTC]

Oww, I got you meant! I did used that 'cuts inside a take' twice: the first scene after the main credits, when the dude leaves de jungle, and after the scene that the girl takes the pictures, when she goes into the jungle. I did used that cuts because it is one of so many resources commonly related to short videos. Breaking the time, cutting the scene, making sync... I understand your critique and really appreciate that, thank you very much!

I was thinking that you were talking about the scene of 'taking pictures', where I put a fast black between each photo. hehehheheh...

pipherj In reply to julium [2009-01-05 00:22:33 +0000 UTC]

there was no point to it. It had no climax, no struggle, no background. It was just simply a movie about a guy putting a girl in a trunk and another girl meeting the guy and takes pictures. C'mon a monkey could have done the same thing but at least there would have been some humor in it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

julium In reply to pipherj [2009-01-05 01:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I do understand and appreciate your sincerity. I do agree that the story is bad but this is the less important part of the video. The great point of this is the method: pictograms take the hole of the words. Could be any story and I hope in near future I can tell a good story with this method.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pipherj In reply to julium [2009-01-05 11:59:51 +0000 UTC]

well even at that some of the pictograms are hard to understand, but I do hope you begin to get better using this method. It has potential.
