Description ok, so continuing with the SpideyHulk, this is pages 2 and 3. I got really into it at this point and I wanted to go all out. I've been struggling as of late with the fact that I can't land a gig and I think that my frustration came out on this page. I'll tell you though, it's good to have fam who are in the same boat. Me and Chris have been talking about the industry a lot lately, and we both feel like we've been going about it the wrong way. We're supposed to add to the industry, not re-hash the same ol nonsense. I know that this is 2 of the most famous characters in the world, but I just want to do what I do with them, if I get a job or not.... feels good to draw without pressure!

enjoy;}

Ah, two of my favorite characters perfectly depicted! It makes me wish they'd make a Spidey/Hulk movie! lol!

I must admit, you have skills, but I spent most my time here reading your comments. You have a balanced and wise outlook on art that's refreshing to read. Very kind of you to share it with all us struggling artists. Your an asset to this community.

S'all good. I'm learning that sometimes you gotta show and prove. I have a six issue deal with Top Cow that I wasn't taking advantage of until recently, so I'm going to concentrate on that blessing, and let God work all that other stuff out. Thanks for stopping by, and for the nice comment;} I promise I got something better, hopefully TC will let me post it....

Have you tried to get a job as a background artist?

It pays money and will get you exposure until you can get more solid comics work.

You should just do a few pages of backgrounds in panels with no characters and send them to Top Cow or Wildstorm or any other pro artist you like. I'm sure they would snatch you up quickly enough.

And you'd be making comic book money to boot.

Heck, I'd give you half my page rate to draw my backgrounds!

I know many pros that would pay you too.

Good luck. You're work is awesome.

Man, your name sounds really familiar... I think we may have met at an after-party or something. Anyway, yeah, I've always avoided the idea of being a background artist only. Firstly, I only do it well for me:} Secondly, I feel like I have a lot more to bring to a story than just my BG's. I wouldn't mind helping someone out every now and then, like if your ever in a crunch, then we could set something up, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it full time.
I was offered a job doing Silvestri's BG's but I turned it down because I couldn't move out to L.A. But I do, however, have a six issue mini-series that I'm currently drawing for Top Cow.
Thanks for the kind words, and if you ever need BG help, just let me know, I'd do it for half your page rate:}

those lines are sick man. I've been working on some stuff (and before i get told its wrong i know) and i keep tossing it. I feel like i forgot how to draw. It's frustrating. I need some inspiration or something. advice?

jusdog In reply to KoRe-Z [2008-06-11 01:21:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know how that feels. Imagine running into that problem with a editor up your back!! or even an approaching con that you want to be prepared for... It's completely frustrating, I know.
The main problem comes from wanting your work to have a certain look or feel. Most young artists (I don't mean that your a young artist... unless you are;} want to just come out of the gate and look friggin awesome, but that's like trying to build muscle without having a skeleton! You have to have something that you excel at. The best thing to do is focus on story telling. Telling the story is the foundation of our industry. Without the story, we'd have nothing but pretty pictures! which would be cool for a while, but before long, we'd get tired of that. And I don't mean the writing either, I mean moving the story forward with your drawings. Even if it's a cover shot, you have to know how to tell a story, with just one picture. I learned how to tell stories when I went to film school, and studying film techniques from watching tons of movies, and reading. I decided that I wanted my comics to have a film like essence. I wanted my backgrounds to look real, as well as to have super creative camera angles. I also wanted to give the audience that feeling you get when you come out of the theatre after seeing a movie that inspires you. So that's the approach that I take when I sit down in front of a sheet of paper. That's the approach I take with my anatomy, cars, boats, BG's, hair, shoes.... etc. So you see, now that I've found how I want to tell the story, my style basically comes out of that. Then, I steal what ever else I need from the other guys

*sigh* Work is fun. It is extremely frustrating and yes i am a young artist, only 16 haha. But yeah i understand it somewhat. i need to work on it., but the fact that i try and try and try and nothing comes out of it is making me so beyond angry. I have exams right now in school and we have 1hr and a half classes so when i get done early i have like an hour to work...i got nothing out of 3 hours today. =[ Grrr. I need to get some good paper i have this cheap sketch book with like grainy paper. =[

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jusdog In reply to KoRe-Z [2008-06-12 05:11:31 +0000 UTC]

...dude, you just gotta relax. There are a few times when you can draw angry, but most of the time, it just doesn't work. When your at school, your mind is in learn mode. Art comes out of inspiration. If your mind is on learn, you can't just switch it to inspired mode that easily, it's takes a few hours. Heck, I start working at like 9pm, but I don't really get it anything done until about 11:30 - 12.... it takes a while to get the day out of my system before I can get down to business. Right now, you just need to concentrate on learning how to draw anatomy, perspective, and basically how the comic business works. Your goal is to have a professional mind state. If you got finals, girl issues, prom, homework, take out the garbage, your rooms a mess, you stink, summer break gotta find a job, gotta get my license, and over all life garbage on your brain, you can't get into that professional mind state. That's not to say that I don't have responsibilities, but this is my job and if I don't do it, I don't eat and pay rent and all that stuff. For you, if you don't do it, you'll still have a roof over your head. You can try and pretend that it's either draw, or don't eat, but it wouldn't work.
So, just concentrate on the bare-bones of drawing comics. Anatomy, perspective, backgrounds, and storytelling. All in that order. By the time your 20, you'll get a job, or I'll pay you myself.

cheers mate;}

jusdog In reply to KoRe-Z [2008-06-12 18:32:55 +0000 UTC]

no no no no, it doesn't matter if it looks good to you or not. You gotta put it up so that others can give you tips on how to get better, that's what an art community is all about. What are you trying to prove anyway? :]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jusdog In reply to KoRe-Z [2008-06-13 00:28:48 +0000 UTC]

so why not put it up here? You never know who's watching... just because no one comments doesn't mean their not looking. If you art doesn't look like you want it to, then fix it. If your anatomy is weak, fix it. Don't compromise, don't say "that's good enough..." Be honest with yourself. If you think it sucks, then fix it. If you draw a car, and it doesn't look like a car, then look at it, and see why it doesn't look like a car. Find an online tutorial (you kids got it easy these days;} on how to draw cars...and FIX IT!!!

work ethic...I'll say it until I turn blue in the face;}

great draftsmanship bro.

my only suggestion (and this is preferential) is the storytelling. if you flipped this page, then, the shot before it (on the last page) would be more consistent giving it even more fluidity.

other than that, awesome-sauce.

and keron is right about the frustration. but that shouldn't stop you.

good luck at comicon, bro...

jusdog In reply to LeSeanThomas [2008-04-14 17:17:00 +0000 UTC]

... Good crit. I'm constantly concerned about the flow of the page. When I was in film school, I learned that whenever you had a character going to the left, it always symbolizes stress, or 'hard times', as most of our population is right handed, and doing things opposite is a lot harder. I tried to make him go left the entire time, but I think it got in the way:}

Will you be in New York? We should hang..

yeah,

"it got in the way."

sounds like you were more about getting off the money shot and forgot the flow of action. flow of action is so much more important. i try to remember it myself everytime. its tough sometimes to remember all these rules when you arent doing them regularly.

spending more time in the thumbnail stage is key.

drawing is the easiest part of it all but also, i think should be the LAST thing you do.

stay up!
