Description
It's been about 2 moons since Mulberry had started to work as Rosegold's personal guard. Although there's been moments he was overwhelmed, it wasn't nearly as bad as he thought, Rosie was a sweet girl and he's had a good time with her. But she is getting older now, it's harder to keep her out of the public eye and so they sent her to school early. She was Miss Amber's newest student, and well Miss Amber is still the same as she was when she was Shining's teacher, if not harsher.
This particular afternoon, Rosegold leaned against Mulberry, pouting. "When's dad coming back?"
"Soon." Mulberry responded. He chuckled when she groaned. "He's got that meeting today with the elites, you know that."
"I knowww but he's always out when i'm not in classes but when i'm in class he's free!" Rosegold complained, "It's not fair."
"Why don't you get your work done now so when he comes back you can have lunch together?" Mulberry looked down at her with a smile.
Rosegold suddenly smiled as well and pulled herself closer whispering, "Oorrr we get ice cream to have with lunch instead?"
"And you skip school?" Mulberry titled his head.
Rose nodded with a big goofy grin.
"Nice try little missy, Miss Amber will be mad at me if I allowed that. Now go on go finish" Mulberry used his hoof to nudge her away. She stuck a tongue out as she pouted away.
Just as she left, Mulberry heard talking outside and stood up, greeting Shining as he walked in.
"Something tells me meeting with the nobles didn't go well?" Mulberry commented as Shining sighed and shook his head.
"They want to meet Rosie. Her manners... she's not trained yet to meet them but they're impatient since she's the first born of her generation." Shining began to take his jewelry off.
"She's a child, they shouldn't expect her to act like a noble lady already." Mulberry added, "What are you going to do, your highness?"
Shining shook his head again, "I don't know. I can't make them wait, but it's not time for her yet." He shifts his weight on his hooves, "I didn't expect to bring her into the public eye this soon either."
"Well, like you said, she's the first born. The people love you all so they're understandably excited to meet the next royal." Mulberry wanted to comfort Shining somehow, but they weren't that close still so he just watched as Shining went and sat down.
"Mulberry, you need to be more strict with her. The nobles are impatient and there are others who are anxious for her to mess up... She needs to grow up quickly as much as I try to protect her, there's too many eyes." Shining's head sunk, he felt so much pressure on his shoulders. But he'd bare the weight of the world for her.
"Your highness, you're doing your best..." Mulberry had a discussion with Bella before and he hesitated to bring it up. "I..."
"Just say it. I know you've talked with Bella." Shining looked at him.
"It's not just Bella, Aerial as well... I know you love Rosegold but your highness please think of what it could do to her living like this. She's a child, she should be able to experience being a child."
"I can't believe you're suggesting I send her away as well, Mulberry." Through Shining's tired look, he seemed to glare at the option.
"Go with her then, your highness." He suggested.
"I can't. I'm the eldest prince." Shining stood up again, "I can't leave, and I can't send her away. She needs to be with her family."
"With all due respect, your highness. She does not need to be here if it's going to harm her in the future, you want her to be safe. You want her to be happy? You know she can't be here then. Send her to your cousin's kingdom if you must, but she really won't be happy here." Mulberry's tone matched Shining's. He tried to reach Shining, father to father. "At least think about it, even if you don't like this option we must think of something eventually."
"I know!" Shining yelled. "I'm trying! My head hasn't settled because I can't think of anything! It's hard, you know! It's so hard, this happened so fast that I can't think straight before something else happens. I can't sleep without worrying about what might happen in the morning and they do something to her! Even with all the helping hands of the palace I still am stressed. I don't know what to do but sending her away won't help!"
Mulberry let him vent, something told him that this has been on Shining's mind for a while. "It is hard. You know what's harder? Watching your child struggle with the decisions you made. When you think you've made the best decision that they just don't understand but come to find out, you were wrong. You were so wrong that if you had considered the other choice, the ending would have been different. That if you could see what the actual better option, you could live to see your child grow better than you could hope.." Mulberry trailed off, these are words he's never spoken out loud before. He could see his stubbornness in Shining. In the name of knowing best what's good for your child, he's seen what happens when you make the wrong choice, he doesn't want Shining to do the same.
Shining could hear the slight strain on his voice and nearly crumbled. He felt tears go down his face. "If I send her away.. you have to be with her." Shining looked at him, "If I can't be there. You have to be. What ever she needs, what ever she wants. Give it to her..." His voice cracked as he looked down into a bow, "Be her father for me."
Mulberry raised Shining's head with his hoof, "She won't be gone forever and she'll be safe. I'll protect her forever. I'll write you letters every night, we'll send pictures, whatever you ask. This is for her, right?"
Shining nodded and in a fit of emotions, he hugged Mulberry tightly. "Thank you, please keep her safe."
"I will, I swear to you." Mulberry held him for as long as he needed, taking in the sudden comfort himself.

I guess that's it, the next part of Rose's life has been decided. She will be sent to live outside of the palace. Rather she lives in her great Aunt Twilight's castle or not is to be decided, perhaps Rosie should have the option to be raised as a normal girl, out in the countryside could be nice. We'll just have to see what's in store for them
