Description
About this insect:I am going to need more time and some help to ID this dragonfly, sorry. There might not be enough information from this photo.
About this shot:
It turns out a lot of predatory insects are more approachable when they are eating. Just this week, I was able to take macros of two dragonflies eating, two crab spiders eating, and one bee-mimic robber fly eating; none-of which could have been possible without the preoccupation of eating.
About the title:
The title is meant to be a silly joke: the dragonfly is eating with grin and a dopey, stoned look to its eyes. Please don't read too much into it. If the title is too distracting, I may end up changing it.

I have to agree with FutaFairy, wonderful macros here.
Great work.
I think 'Dragonfly's with Munchies' is an excellent title btw.
This one looks very similar to the one in my photo Dan7156-1, but I have no idea of ID, sorry.
Some of the other dragonfly's I found to be very jittery and easily spooked, but this one never seemed to care how close I got.
You may be on to something though with the mealtime distraction observation.

I took a look through your gallery (nice gallery btw) and found "Dan 7156-1" (fav.me/d9s315w ), but I am not sure if that is the same species. The head certainly looks similar, but it seems like there are a lot of features that are simply not pictured. Take a look at this link (imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/bio/β¦ ). Several of the differentiating features are related to wings and abdomen which couldn't fit into the frame. Dragonflies are so large, that I need to be identifying them before taking a close-up macro, but I simply lack the knowledge at this point. Oh well...
Anyway, thank you!
