Description Some black and white thumbnails that I did for school. I'm still learning the finer details of using values in an environment as opposed to painting or portraits T T

They really look great. I'm now trying to learn values too for landscapes (digital idiot question - how is learning values different from just painting? In a nutshell, isn't it painting the background lighter / less opaque, painting the foreground more opaque / intense? I don't know the terminology and I'm sorry if this question makes no sense.)

Don't worry it made sense because you're exactly right haha the background is lighter and everything coming into the foreground gets progressively darker. However its not a fixed rule, it depends on what your focal point is in the drawing, whatever you want to be the subject must stand out from the rest of the drawing whether it is the darkest or lightest thing on the page. Whatever you don't want attention to be drawn to should have less contrast, so what I do is squint my eyes and see if my line of sight is drawn to my focal point and my mind is ignoring the rest. I hope this makes sense haha XD

It makes perfect sense, and it explains exactly why I find many of my paintings too cluttered and crowded and untidy, haha! I've been looking at art and figuring out why some pieces look so great, and mine don't, and I realized it had something to do with the values, but only when you said all this did it become clear. Thanks so much!

Haha another thing my lecturers tell me is to plan my drawings out but I find that hard with environments because I tend to photobash my backgrounds. But yes values are very important, sometimes a gentle variation is more preferable over a stark contrast, personally I really struggle with environment paintings because I'm so used to greyscale portraiture which is quite different.

I'm experimenting with greyscale right now - it's so different from how I've been splashing colour from the start. I like how it's making me focus on values more. Photobashing is new to me, but I plan to try it too. Thanks! I'm learning a lot from you!

This is beautiful I really do love the drama in each scene.

I know it's got nothing to do with it, but it reminds me of my story in the midst a post-apocalyptic world that happened in the 18th century. Abandoned forts, empty vessels, bodies and destruction all along the coast of the caribbean.

Thank you Haha yeah for some reason I wanted each scene to depict either ruins or a sense of drama lol XD
