Description This is my major project for my first semester in art school. We were asked to come up for a brief and pretend the lecturer is the art director. I was very fortunate to be approached by during that time asking to use some of my other pieces and I thought hey why not get an actual brief from an actual client lol. He asked for a piece depicting Feanor after the first Kinslaying, and I decided to go for the no remorse route ( or at least no outward remorse route). Feanor as we all know is a really prideful, strong minded elf, so much so that he literally burst into flames when he died like his spirit was that. Fiery. So maybe in his private moments he deeply regretted the hole he has dug everyone into but in the public eye at least I would think he held his head up high despite the massacre and starting a trend for Kinslaying.

wow...Feanor, truly in character and in your work is truly beautiful and noble. Yes, I think, repentance came to him (according to Tolkien) just before his death. If it was remorse at all, given the fact that he again took the Oath from his sons, even knowing that it was impossible.

I would say that it was not Gothmog who killed him. He simply bursted with anger.Β

well, no, no, Feanor was not evil by nature, just violently hot-tempered. And very passionate.Β Β

It's an excellent picture, and I really like it. It's the written description I take issue with.

Genocide is the intentional, systematic, slaughter of an ethnic or racial group.

Having a pitched battle because you tried to steal some ships, and the sailors started drowning you, and you tried -and failed- to defend your self until your brother came to your rescue is NOT genocide. Thievery is wrong but not genocide. Defending your property is not genocide, though you may argue against the use of deadly force. Defending yourself from being drowned is not genocide.

If you want someone who did attempt genocide, look at Aragorn and Eomer. They did mount a campaign to kill out all the orcs. It was intentional and systematic. And since orcs breed the same way we do, that included the infants and children.Β

Alqualonde was terrible, but it was not genocide. Referring to it as such minimizes actual acts of genocide (some of which still continue today.) It also perpetuates misconceptions regarding what genocide means and what acts constitute genocide. Over use and misunderstanding cause people, seeing that term used in media, to ignore it and the implications.

Genocide does not mean 'horrible thing done to someone'. It means 'an act so horrible a new word had to be created to describe it.' It took the deaths of eleven million people, (fourteen if you count the Russian soldiers trapped in a barren peninsula with no food) and an attempt to kill out three! different ethnic groups, as well as anyone who did not conform to the 'ideal' to create that word in the most awful and dehumanizing ways..

Please do not use 'genocide' to describe a theft gone wrong. Use it to truly describe the horror it was created to represent.

Oh no I totally get you like I'm pretty ashamed I made that error cuz it isn't like the topic is unfamiliar to me too like I used to do extensive research on stuff like that so it was like oh man that was dumb > < And if I were you I'll probably have said the same thing to me too XD

I'm glad you understood. Some people get really upset when I point it out, so I'm really happy this went well.
I also used to research this. It's kind of personal because 3 of my four grandparents were Holocaust Survivors. My maternal grandfather was deported in '37 and spent the entire war in different camps. His mother and two brothers were killed, and even now we still don't know what happened to his father.
I did a whole bunch of collages about the Holocaust and all the different badges. It actually connected me to a lot of different groups. I met some JHVH Witnesses when I looked into the purple triangle. I learned more about the Gay community when I researched pink triangles. And so on.
The center piece was a collage of children from all the different acts of genocide in the past hundred years. There were a lot more than I realized, and the numbers are staggering. But when you look at those children's faces, that's where you see the real horror.
That's probably why the misuse of the term bothers me so much.

Oh nah you should keep on correcting people I mean this is a fact not an opinion. Yeah my uni used to invite holocaust survivors to come and talk about their experiences every year and I've never missed one which was kind of why I was like. Oh jeez. I kind of guessed from your tone it is a personal history related thing so definitely thanks for correcting me > <

Haha I have someone else mistaken him for Finrod but I guess that's the unnerving thing about people like Feanor who believes so resolutely in themselves that people are swept up by the moment and one Oath later realised whelp we did not think this through XD

And he never had one moment of doubt or regret or remorse. That's how frightening such obsession is.Β
It is interesting to portray characters different than how the rest of the fandom sees them. I tend to stick to canon/fanon, but I always like seeing your take on characters. Your Maedhros is in my view just perfect. And your fierce Thranduil was delicious!Β
