Description The finished fox masks with fur.

Fur was the last thing to apply, we used 2 types. A thick brown and orange to replicate the colors of the cross fox. Fur was applied in a large sheet cut to the shape of the markings. The bottom jaw was also a separate piece. All glued directly to the base of the mask. Lots of hair trimming later, it defined the shape of the face. A neck piece was sewn and added. (though next time i'd like to make a better shape then a tube for the neck peice that covers your own neck/chest)

Ears were sewn into the fabric on the sides, made quickly and a bit too roughly out of paint sticks, duct tape and fur.

Eye sight is out of the tear ducts. Both tear ducts were covered in black mesh, but one mask had to have it removed. Unfortunately the vision the miscalculated (resulting in poor vision) in one from how we thought it was going to sit on the head. Something to think about next time I ever think about doing this.

To finish it up and add more depth to the two color fur, we painted in shadows, and other fur tones to make it stand out.

My sister and I both worked on these. It was the first mask we have ever made.

When I first saw them, I thought they were taxidermy specimens. I actually had to read the entire description in disbelief.,.
Still don't believe it!

I only have some old ones that need to be re-furred. When I get the money, or a sponsor for the project, i'll be doing a refreshed sculpt for a updated set of masks.

The realism of the masks is truly amazing.
Those eyes are very amazing, and have a realistic look to them.
I also love the soft beautiful looking faux fur fabric. Where did you get it?

I just bought it at a local fabric store, had a really bad selection actually. We combed out the fur and painted it after. There is two colors/pieces used, the dark brown and the light gold. The face fur was shaved down and painted after.

How did you paint it?
It looks really nicely done.

Airbrush to darken the muzzle from grey/brown to black to blend with the back hair. Then a small brush with really diluted acrylic paint to work highlights and lowlights into the whole thing.

JamJams In reply to K-einess [2011-03-30 18:16:37 +0000 UTC]

I have an airbrusher and it makes the fur hard. :/

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

K-einess In reply to JamJams [2011-03-30 18:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Make sure you keep brushing the fur and that the paint is diluted. If its too heavy it will make it hard.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JamJams In reply to K-einess [2011-03-30 18:55:57 +0000 UTC]

So brush it while you are using it?
Also how do you dilute it?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

K-einess In reply to JamJams [2011-03-30 19:33:05 +0000 UTC]

Get a slicker brush and comb it in after you put a light coat on. You can just dilute it with water if its acrylic paint.

JamJams In reply to K-einess [2011-03-30 19:57:33 +0000 UTC]

Will a wire brush be okay?
Well its airbrusher paint.

They are solid. You can see what they are made of by looking at the progress pictures in my gallery.

Thank you I spent along time trying to get the shape that I wanted, and painting it. I really hope that I can try and work on doing more of it again this summer and make them more comfortable to wear.

You're very welcome. A friend of mine is thinking about making a suit with my helb, and I`m hoping for a silverfox, for I love the darker muzzle and paws. If we do, I bet we will orientate on your shading.

I wish you good luck for your further experiments and development!

These are you first masks!? Wow, you make all the other starters look bad. With some practice you could be making and selling these for alot!

K-einess In reply to extorpid [2010-08-02 15:22:03 +0000 UTC]

Haha, my first mask, but both my sister and I have played with sculpting animal heads before. I've also been drawing canines for a long time, so the details weren't too hard, it was like drawing in a 3 dimensional form. Fitting it and the working jaws were the hardest part!

JAWolf [2010-08-01 05:42:35 +0000 UTC]

For a first effort, actually even if they were done as something later on in your work with masks, they are exemplary examples of masks.

Some beautiful work there.

K-einess In reply to JAWolf [2010-08-02 15:19:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, a lot of planning went into these and hope! I really wanted people to see it...but not see it as a "mask", but to engage the imagination. I'm pleased with them, though they aren't perfect for sure. I learned so much making them though. I might try foam next.

You should take a closer look at making them and selling them. Your work is good, and there are bound to be a few mistakes as you teach yourself the art.
When I started out it was just a hobby. Now I do it every day for a living.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

K-einess In reply to GriffinLeather [2010-08-01 01:12:56 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's in avoidable that nothing is ever going to run totally smooth on the way. Probably my greatest fear, not living up to a customers expectations, though I suppose everyone starts somewhere!

I'm actually going into my final year of university for a bachelor of fine arts (taking most of everything). So my hobby kind of turned into school with a aim to find some sort of job in the art business.

GriffinLeather In reply to K-einess [2010-08-01 02:11:28 +0000 UTC]

I can not tell you how much I fear that a client will not like my work, or I deliver later than they want it and thats all I hear about. I have been making and selling my art and other items for 4 years as a soul source of income. It will happen once in a while. But dont let your own fears deter you from persuing your art. More people will love what you do, than dislike it.
And one way to get around a client not liking it is to not offer commission work till you feel comfortable with it. Just sell what you are comfortable with making. Client sees the finished product, loves it and buys it.

Great to hear about school. I am self taught and wished I had formal study.
Nice thing about the physical arts is that it spans through out several industries. Movies, theater, music business,LARP, ren fair, TV and the list goes on.
Love to see you post one on ebay or etsy. Might be a good way to make some bucks while going to school.

Also a good idea, I think ill have to rethink this now.

Good. I am pleased it was inspiring. You never know where the road will take you until you walk down that road. And if you dont like what you see, just turn back, or take another direction.
Hope to see more of your art.

would you ever offer masks like this for sale?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

K-einess In reply to FoxyCreations [2010-07-28 23:26:36 +0000 UTC]

I honestly dont know. I've done sculpted heads before/heads like this as a puppet, but no other masks. The time and cost of materials would be pretty high, and i'm far from perfect doing them. I'm not sure how I'd get the proper fit on person if they weren't around.
