Description Just some details of [link] for a customer. Go see the full deviation! Much more impressive than this bad-photo jazz~!

-----

This creation was made with a type of crafting called needle felting. Basically what happens is I take a bunch of loose (i.e. roving) wool and jab it with a needle (many, many times). The wool bonds to itself, slowly getting firmer and firmer. Eventually, it's firm enough to stand by itself in a sculpture-like way. By adding more roving wool, I can sculpt a creature or a person or whatever out of the wool.

Needlefelting is a relatively new craft, having only been invented 30 years or so ago. It's similar to the process of wet felting, but instead of using water, needles are used.

My needlefelt creations almost always include a wire base, so they are extremely posable, and I find the freedom of sculpting and the resulting plushness to be everything I could have asked for in a medium.

I happily take commissions, and my prices range from 20 and up, depending on the complexity but mainly on the size.

Woah... I haven't done much with needlefelting, but I've experimented enough to know it's a heck of a lot of work. I can't believe how smooth and perfect you got it, especially considering its scale! $500 is a totally fair price - I wish I had the cash. ^_^

Well, that particular one is pretty dense. I don't even remember how I got it like that, aheh... but it's a lot less work if I go less dense, and even still, it's underpriced at $500. Something I've learnt the hard way...

I would just be interested in a smaller sized one, these are spectacular!

now I'm curious, how much would a plushie cost, you know life sized but stitched and stuffed with cotton NOT needle felted?

I wouldn't know; I don't normally work as a plush artist. I would suggest asking someone more familiar with that form of artistry for their quote.

D: HOLY.... that is alot of money.... @_@ i cant afford it then... id be willing to art trade and possibly bring down the price or something (id trade as much as was needed ) and i could probably pay up to $80 but 500 is way too steep for this college student

k-times-two In reply to Jacqueline-Victoria [2011-08-14 18:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Eeeeh, sorry. Needlefelting large things takes a ton of work; I'm not really interested in offering trades for a life-size Mew.

I mean, $80 wouldn't even cover the cost. *-*;

well, how big is the life size? i could probably pass for something smaller ^^' idk if i would want it to be larger than (from the top of its head to its butt) to be 16" (unless that is actual size mew o_o)

Mew is 1'4", so yeah, 16 inches tall. (counting the tail, it's taller than me...)

Not a plush. A needlefelt.

And yes, someone has. c:

Jacqueline-Victoria In reply to k-times-two [2011-08-14 23:55:59 +0000 UTC]

needle felt.... so you dont stuff it? or is it stuffed with cotton (or something) and the material is felt?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

k-times-two In reply to Jacqueline-Victoria [2011-08-15 00:04:58 +0000 UTC]

Nope to all of the above. I literally take a bunch of needles and stab wool until it felts together.

k-times-two In reply to Jacqueline-Victoria [2011-08-15 01:31:42 +0000 UTC]

Hence the expense. It's a lot of work. A Mew takes a full work week. And the materials get expensive at that size.

Jacqueline-Victoria In reply to k-times-two [2011-08-15 04:30:48 +0000 UTC]

@_@ i see

it doesnt seem like you would be able to sell alot of them at that price though, and if it costs you so much money arent you losing money by making them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

k-times-two In reply to Jacqueline-Victoria [2011-08-16 20:18:17 +0000 UTC]

Nah, not really. The work is the part you pay for, mostly. And as for not selling much, it kind of depends. There is quite a lot of interest, and a couple of people (so far as I am aware) are saving up for one. Which suits me fine; I have plenty of other projects that need my attention in the meanwhile.

The head looks like it needs to be a little bit more rounded, but this is still insanely adorable! I would so buy one if I had the cash, but isn't that what they all say? XD

You're completely right. This is just the first one; the second one has a much more rounded form.

And pretty much. Thank you nonetheless.

After reading about the process, I can imagine that it isn't all that cuddly?

k-times-two In reply to MiniMyu [2011-06-10 01:22:27 +0000 UTC]

Nah. I love cuddling with my Mew. Not very soft, but it's sort of like cuddling with a small scruffy dog.

MiniMyu In reply to k-times-two [2011-06-10 01:30:43 +0000 UTC]

XD Good comparison. Maybe when I get a better paying job, I'll pester you for a shiny Mew plush.

k-times-two In reply to MiniMyu [2011-06-10 02:27:49 +0000 UTC]

That would be awesome. I want to make a shiny one, but also I don't. It'd be a lot of effort for nothing... until someone commissions me for one. X3

Well yeah. Life-size mew is 1'4", not including tail.

With tail, Mew is taller than me.

I thought he was much smaller :\ but then again my only in game experience is chasinf him through tall grass xD

Sorry I should have said it was awesome

AngelheartTheWarrior In reply to OneLoneTree [2012-07-28 14:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Hey... Um... Just wondering, which game did you have to chase Mew through tall grass? I know you have to go to the top of Mt. Mew (or some mountain that sounds like that) and have to chase it through the grass, by locating it with it's tail, but I forgot the game, and I WANT MEW. So which game was it? Gold? Silver?

Sorry, just want to know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OneLoneTree In reply to AngelheartTheWarrior [2012-07-29 05:40:52 +0000 UTC]

It is faraway island in generation III Hoenn. The ticket to get it is a event exclusive item unless you use and old hacking device called an action replay.

Other than that it is unobtainable, sorry

AngelheartTheWarrior In reply to OneLoneTree [2012-07-29 13:31:48 +0000 UTC]

Darn it!

Well, I have Pokemon Ranch on the Wii, and there's this person called Hayley (she's a CPU) who will give you a Mew when you get the Ranch to a certain level. So, I can still get Mew!

k-times-two In reply to OneLoneTree [2011-06-10 01:25:00 +0000 UTC]

I understand. The in-game did a very poor job of size relativity. I mean, Wailord fits in the same frame that Charizard fills up. I use stats pulled from Bulbapedia.

Hehe, thank you.
