In the « Retake on the exam » arc Gaara’s sand immediately reacted to Yukiko in a protective way, even before himself he could consider tolerating her. Even if Gaara was unable to understand his feelings at first, and to accept and understand his desire of protecting her, Karura could feel it. She decided, when they met and Yukiko got attacked, to protect Yuki like she would protect her son. Because she felt she would be someone who could help to guide her son to the right path and give him the love she cannot. Yukiko has a very maternal side to her that we can feel with the way she takes care of her sister, and basically everyone around her. She has this strong benevolence that helped Gaara changing and echoed Naruto’s speech. Yukiko never had any bad judgment towards Gaara, she would only state facts and remind him his actions have consequences and can affect other people. She never really rejected him even when he hurt her, by being clumsy and not accepting his own growing feelings, she just took some distance after one of their fights to make him think of his actions. But him coming back with his umbrella showing his intention to change and apologize was enough for her to forgive him.

They went through a lot together between the « Retake on the exam » and the « 4th ninja war » arc. He lost her several times, she lost him, they kept chasing each other but couldn’t seem to be able to reach one another. First during the « Albino Island » she confessed, but he had to accept to let her go back to her country, so he kept his feelings to himself. Then when Yukiko was dragged into the sect in the « Circle of Lost souls » arc, he thought he had lost her for the sect, and they became « ennemies » as Yukiko was now a criminal, and an enemy of Sunagakure. He told her he never wanted to see her again on his land or he would kill her with his own hands. It was painful, it was a lot of frustration for the two of them, but Gaara had to put Sunagakure’s safety before his own feelings.

Yukiko appeared again before the war, escaping the sect, but in a very bad shape. Gaara took the risk to hid her and protect her when she was still unable to communicate. It wasn’t easy to forgive her at first, but she really understood her wrongs, apologised wand was ready to face the consequences of her action. Love was stronger than resentment, he forgave her. He knew she would have to be trialed one day tho, before the war, Gaara’s priority was to keep Yukiko safe and outside of this conflict.

Karura knew what feelings Gaara had for her, and she tried several times to establish a connexion with Yukiko through dreams, knowing because of her bond with the dead there may be a way to communicate, even shortly and send a message. But it failed as Yukiko, too young and too lost in her life at this point was unable to open herself. However the mother’s approval can manifest through these hands of sand protecting both her son and the one he loves.

I found that it would be a beautiful cover for my wattpad story !

I had this idea for so long but never had the skills to actually draw it ! I made an attempt last year and failed and kinda rage quitted but got the motivation to get back tp it recently ! I plan to make two versions : one anime like and one with the coloring more in my style with the Chinese ink brush and the Chinese printing colors. I didnt do this one yet so idk how it will turnout atm hopefully good ! But at least I’m super happy with this version already. ♥♥
