Gaara and Yukiko deeply care for each other and look after each other in their own way. However he never belittles her. He knows where her limits are and what are her weakness. And regardless how much he believes in her as a strong woman, he also knows she doesn’t have absolute control of her chakra, nor is a great fighter in general. Being petite and albino, she is not exactly built for combat! In Sunagakure she’s particularly vulnerable because of the sun, yet she never hesitates paying him a visit.

It is the first time Gaara experienced love, so it is also the first time he felt this fear of losing his soulmate. So at some point he became over protective which led up to an argument. But nothing they couldn’t solve out. Because Yukiko was not mad about it. She spent most of her life feeling unsafe so she enjoys being in his arms and feeling like around him nothing can happen to her. She is thankful for his attention and protection. But she wanted to allow him to relax and let her do her mistakes and learn from it. Like he did before, supporting her in her journey, warning her but ultimately let her make mistakes if needed.

Gaara is also ashamed about this over controlling side of him. He had to learn of let go. He doesn’t want to be like her father, having power over her. Especially since unlike him he genuinely does act out of love, not possession. And she understood it.

They found a balance quite quickly. A few weeks after this discussion, Gaara gave Yukiko her umbrella-katana, symbol of their love, and his will to offer her a mean to protect herself without his help. Empowering her in a way no other man did.
