Description
Niobe's sons and daughters were killed by apollo and diana and she wept so bitterly for them that the gods turned her to stone, but she continued to weep and formed a riverI found it! That was bugging me so much, cuz that was the myth I had in mind, but I couldn't remember the name.

There's lots of folklore like that. I remember one where the mother cried so much that the dead child yelled at her mother from her grave "let me rest!" Then there's the one where the dead son appears to his mother and beseeches her to cease crying lest he drown.
