Merrill please stop using blood magic ;_;Bluuuuh this portrait drove me nuts. Just wasn't happy with it no matter what I did. Plus painting liquid reflections and such is something I am so very bad at.
So I've given up and this is what I'm sticking with. Sorry :c

Merrill is one of my favourite characters in the franchise and let me tell you, this is absolute amazing. So many feelings, just from looking at this.

This is a really beautiful piece, well done! You've captured the beauty and tragedy of Merrill's character quite well, and all the little details like the blood and tears really make the pic stand out. Consider this an automatic fave, and I'll definitely have to check out the rest of your stuff as well. Great work!
(I also have to admit that I don't really mind Merrill's use of blood magic, as she uses it in a fairly ethical manner, and it raises a lot of intriguing moral questions that otherwise would have been unasked. If nothing else, it's certainly better than the simplistic morality tales and condescending lectures that plagued Inquisition. God forbid that Bioware actually treat their audience like adults... /rant)

I was hoping to portray the moment after Merrill is forced to kill her Keeper. Poor thing was devastated. Didn't want anyone to pay the cost for her.

I'll agree Merrill is pretty darn ethical in her use of blood magic, but her naivety is what has me constantly worrying for her. No Merrill, demons are bad. Please stop talking to one and assuring me it means no harm
I find blood magic in general quite interesting. If you're using your own blood, I don't see much of a problem with it. But it seems like blood magic always comes with terrible costs no matter what.

You're very welcome! Totally get where you're coming from regarding her attitudes towards demons, though it is nice every once in a while to through some moral ambiguity into the mix, especially considering how the line between spirit and demon is a lot thinner than it first appears. If you haven't read 's excellent fanfiction, "Shadows Within", I'd definitely recommend it; it's a great story that does a lot to examine these issues, and seems like it'd be right up your alley.

Demons are bad, yes, but spirits can become bad in the blink of an eye if we expect them to, no? Each is one side of a coin, never without the other being right around the corner.
Blood magic doesn't seem to be much more dangerous to me, just that our only examples are slavers, cultists, or psychos. Merrill was the exception, but had an obsession for a demon to latch onto.
We haven't really seen a mage who prefers blood magic to disconnect them from the Fade and it's dreams. Or who uses it as a bolster to normal magic. Neither are impossible, but it seems like we're meant to hate blood magic. Damn Chantry.

I like what Morrigan said in Inquisition - something along the lines of 'no magic is inherently evil, it's what you do with it that matters'. I wish Merrill wouldn't use blood magic because she risked so much with it, rather than doing something immoral.
Demons and spirits really interest me in DA - how a spirit can become 'corrupted' in a sense, and even become a demon in extreme circumstances if forced away from its core ideals. Like with Justice, warped by Anders' anger into a spirit of Vengeance instead. None of Anders' other emotions seemed to touch Justice and influence him, even though we saw in Awakening that Justice was starting to 'grow' and start wanting more than well, justice with his life. Example being his yearning for what Kristoff and his wife had.
But we've never seen the opposite, a demon influenced by positives. Never seen a demon do anything truly benevolent (correct me if I'm wrong). Make a deal with a demon and there's always a cost, and perhaps you won't be the one to be hurt by it, which is why Merrill's dealings with one bothered me.
Kitty from DAO comes to mind. She seemed almost passive, claiming to wish only to see our world. Nothing wrong with that, I feel. But she still wanted Amelia's body in the end, and that's when I stopped her.
Then there's Jowan. He claimed he only started using blood magic to be as good a mage as the magi Warden. But then he was a dumbass and got a lot of people hurt, derp.

Benevolent isn't the right word for discussing spirits and demons. Anders states this well enough, himself.
Any spirit is a matter of perspective. Demons, too, may do things they otherwise wouldn't out of curiosity or interest. A demon's desires doesn't necessarily have to be violent or detrimental. Sloth in the Harrowing from Origins is an example. He got to have fun and you could stand to gain if you proved to have wit.
Demons are quite interesting. They are predictable and not at the same time, not too different from the living they emulate. Spirits are more naïve, blinded by their virtue while Demons seem to be aware beyond theirs.

That game was unique for it's blood magic, not many games use that magic.. Hopefully we'll get some of that in sequels

Poor Merrill ;__; I love her, and I do wish she would stop with the blood magic. The quest in DA2 where you have to fight the Keeper always breaks my heart.

I have done one in the past! But since all I do is rendered model edits I feel like my contribution to an art trade would be lacking. It takes less talent than an actual painting afterall. Plus, I'm very limited in what I do. I only make Dragon Age/Warcraft/Mass Effect pictures.

I may have to hold off on agreeing to a trade for now. I have a request list already, and currently my schedule for completing them is 'whenever I feel like it'. Due to RL reasons I'm trying to keep the pressure off by not guaranteeing anyone anything right now (because I suck). And an art trade would rather demand I get off my butt and make something ;D
