Background practice. Color inspired by [link]
No I did not straight up copy her. This was drawn from a sketch I did in class. The place is the same, the autopilot is different. I just mimicked the coloring because it's the same place, somewhere in Sidus.

Thanks! Huh... I guess I can kind of see that. Auto is actually an android though, that's his autopilot uniform ^^ [link]
Helpful hint, some artists don't like hearing 'your art is like this and this from this fandom'
Doesn't particularly bother me, especially since the design is LonelyOne's, but I think one of my chars it would irk me.

Like what .______. This is my favorite piece and I don't intend to change it, it just irks me a little when people say your shading sucks and don't give me any good tips on fixing it.

I never said they were insulting me, I know they were not, I would just like people to be more specific when critiquing me so I know what I'm supposed to be improving on.

Looking through your gallery, you're certainly improving, but if you don't mind me asking, what does your practice consist of? Just straight up drawing from imagination, or do you do something else, too? I'd just, love to give you some hints here and there, but I know very little about your creation process.

My practice, you see in my gallery. I post nearly everything EXCEPT some pen doodles I do in class on a regular basis.
It's true I do a lot of drawing from imagination, but I will always use a ref if I can't get a pose right or something (and by ref I don't mean go grab something off the internet, no, I mean have my friend sitting next to me stand up and pose)
I use my own hands as refs for any drawings with hands in them xD
Otherwise I draw all from imagination.

I see! You stylize heavily already and stylization is not a bad thing per se, but I believe it hinders your progress a little. I don't know if you're already familiar with these 'essays', but I would like to redirect you to them: part 1: [link] and part 2: [link]
I immediately thought of this essay because the faces of your figures tend to be much too elongated and, unlike the rest of your pictures, don't change a lot. I do applaud you for using references and such, it's a very necessary tool, but your problem might just be the heavy stylization.

I have to say that was a very interesting essay. I am actually familiar with a lot of those concepts... I'm well aware what I'm drawing is no where close to realism and is heavily stylized. I know this. I did learn to draw from cartoons (manga to be exact) and I know I learned a lot of things wrong.
I have trouble getting away from my own incorrect 'style' because I've used it for so long, but if you saw some of my much older things, you would see I am trying... while still trying to keep some elements, which might be my problem.
I don't really see my style itself as the problem, rather the fact I tend to get anatomy wrong because I concentrate on the style first and the anatomy later.
Bad.
Lately I've been using guidelines more and learning some proportion and facial structure, and I think I'm improving. As you pointed out, my faces still need work.
I agree with you, I do need to drift away from my cartoony style a bit, (fix the long face issue x.x) it's just hard to hear that when I've been using it so long, and a little wounding.
But I am trying. Thank you for the links and the advice. and the intelligent conversation for once, It's nice when people show genuine concern and try to help rather than just pointing out my faces are wonky and leaving it there. Thanks.

It -is- difficult and what's especially terrible is noticing that you simply cannot draw from life if you put stylization first and faith to realistic features later. I remember having to draw a still life when I was fifteen, I had no idea what I was supposed to do, I almost cried when I realised that I had to relearn everything I've learnt until then.
I don't ask you to completely stop drawing cartoonish figures! It would be a mistake to completely abandon your preferences. Stylize to your heart's content, but after a few life drawing sessions and attempts to truly capture realistic features, you will pretty much automatically become more versatile and your personal style more refined.
Realistic drawing really isn't the be-all and end-all of things, it's actually very boring if you do nothing else besides that and add no personal tweaks to your art. It's really about distinction and learning the rules before breaking them all the time.
You have a very admirable attitude towards your personal growth, I'm sure it will get you somewhere. But remember not to be too self-deprecating, either, don't forget that art is fun and a means of self-expression ... I used to forget it a lot and it actually hurt my improvement, haha.
Yeah, people don't care a lot about being helpful - if they don't happen to be friends with you, anyway. Good luck to you.
